School concerts and plays bloom across the valley in spring

Southern Nevada middle school and high school singers and musicians will participate in the Community College of Southern Nevada’s Jazz Week. The vocal choirs from Eldorado High School and Leavitt Middle School will perform in the Vocal Jazz Invitational concert at 7:30 p.m. April 24. The Silverado High School Jazz Band and the Silvestri Junior High School Jazz Band will perform at the Jazz Band Invitational concert at 7:30 p.m. April 25. The concerts will be in the community college BackStage Theatre at 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave. in North Las Vegas. Tickets for each concert are $5, and are available by calling 651-5483.

In other youth news:

* More than 400 scouts from the Las Vegas Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America will plant 4,500 trees and plants for Earth Day at the Las Vegas Wash. The scouts from 30 Cub Scout Packs and Scout Troops will work on 15 acres of land at the wash from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

* The Las Vegas Youth Orchestras will perform their final concert of the season at 4 p.m. April 28 at Artemus Ham Hall on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway. The Ensemble, Senoia, Symphony and Philharmonic orchestras will perform. The Las Vegas Youth Orchestras feature more than 300 musicians ages 8 to 18. Tickets for the concert are $3 to $6, and are available by calling 895-2787.

* The theater department at Palo Verde High School will present “A Piece of My Heart: A Play in Two Acts” at 6:30 p.m. April 25-27 in the school theater, 333 Pavilion Center Drive. Tickets are $5 in advance, and $7 at the door. For ticket reservations call 799-1450, Ext. 4051.

* The Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Performing and Visual Arts will present “The Grapes of Wrath” at 7 p.m. April 26-28 and May 3-5 in the Lowden Theatre for the Performing Arts, Ninth Street and Clark Avenue. Tickets are $12, and are available by calling (800) 585-3737.

* Six young men from the Las Vegas Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America have recently become Eagle Scouts:

Derek R. Gibson, 15, is the son of Greg and Christy Gibson. He is a member of Troop No. 803

Bronson Hair, 17, is the son of Ron and Barbara Hair. He is a member of Troop No. 205.

Daniel Leavitt, 17, is the son of Jim and LeeAnne Leavitt. He is a member of Troop No. 524.

Tanner Long, 14, is the son of Larry and Tracey Long. He is a member of Troop No. 261.

Cody Mallory, 15, is the son of Natalie and Steve Mallory. He is a member of Troop No. 423.

Christopher Swan, 15, is the son of Matthew and Brenda Swan. He is a member of Troop No. 43.
