Updated November 26, 2022 - 3:23 pm

A suspected drunken driver was arrested in connection with a fatal two-car collision early Saturday in the Spring Valley area, Las Vegas police said.

Yonas Nera, 19, of Las Vegas, was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on suspicion of driving under the influence after the crash.

At about 3:45 a.m., the driver of a 2022 Hyundai Sonata was heading west on West Flamingo Road approaching Lindell Road at a high rate of speed when the driver of a 2013 Dodge Dart traveling east on Flamingo turned left into the path of the Hyundai.

The front of the Hyundai collided with the right side of the Dodge, which then left the street near the northwest corner of the intersection while the Hyundai continued west before stopping in the road.

Both cars became engulfed in flames. The driver of the Hyundai was able to get out of the car, but the motorist in the Dodge could not escape and was beyond resuscitation when first responders arrived.

The Clark County Fire Department doused the car fires.

Police reported that Nera showed signs of impairment at the scene and took him into custody.

He was treated for serious injuries in the collision.

Police based their initial investigation of the accident on evidence at the scene, witness statements and video surveillance.

Metro’s collision investigation section is handling the ongoing probe into the crash.
