BLM to present Sloan Canyon plans at meeting — VIDEO

A paved road and parking lot, restrooms and hiking trails are part of the plans for Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area, and the Bureau of Land Management wants to know your thoughts about it.

Bureau officials will hold a meeting from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday to present the proposal and answer questions.

The meeting will be held at Levi Strauss & Co., 501 Executive Airport Drive in Henderson.

Officials also will discuss other alternatives for the 48,438-acre conservation area about 25 miles southeast of Las Vegas, BLM said.

The paved access road would start at Democracy Drive and end at a paved parking area near Petroglyph Canyon, BLM said. A temporary visitor contact station with restrooms and information also would be built. Trails would be added to the hiking network already available.

A concept animation of what the access road might look like is available on YouTube.

Comment cards will be available at Thursday’s meeting, and public input will be accepted through Oct. 12 at bwarner@blm.gov.

An environmental analysis of the proposed actions is available online at http://1.usa.gov/1VdYEke.

The conservation area was established in 2002 and funded with $63 million from the sale of 480 acres at the southern edge of Henderson. The area ranges from lowland dry lake beds to volcanic rock peaks, and includes several large concentrations of American Indian rock art.

Access to Sloan Canyon currently is provided by a few dozen miles of hiking trails and a 4-mile rocky road only suitable for high-clearance, four-wheel drive vehicles.
