Legislature was protecting special interests with elimination of program

Due to Nevada’s revenue deficit, the state’s aging and disability services division proposed to the legislature the elimination of the Senior Tax Assistance Rent Rebate program.

The legislature’s Republicans and Democrats approved the state’s budget with the elimination of the STARR program in an effort to fund other critical services.

It is evident that the Nevada Legislature protects only the special interests, businesses and corporations and (have) no new taxes.

The legislature believed that the state’s budget deficits and unemployment can be eliminated simply by cutting taxes further and cutting the programs that provide assistance to the poor and senior retirees who struggle to survive and pay for basic necessities.

Over the past 30 years the super wealthiest in the United States received far more tax cuts and benefits from the federal and state governments than the poor, the middle class and low-income senior retirees with no cost-of-living adjustments in 2010 or 2011 to lower the federal deficit on the back of poor American retirees.

It is important to establish some clarity about the causes of our federal and state deficits, the high unemployment now, and the federal deficit that President Obama inherited from the Republican administrations.

Summerlin area needs a Walmart

I just read the “Eyeing Recovery” article in (the Aug. 9) Summerlin View. I have lived in Sun City Summerlin for five years now and absolutely love the area except for the fact that I have to drive a distance to get to a Super Walmart or even a regular Walmart. Here is my question: Summerlin keeps building all these little villages with all the little specialty stores, yet the Hallmark store closed up and (there is) no Walmart nearby. The closest Walmart is at Cheyenne (Avenue) and Rainbow (Boulevard), and the closest Super Walmart is in the Centennial Parkway area.

I know Summerlin is a very affluent area, but you can’t tell me that a lot of people wouldn’t want to do their shopping at a Super Walmart. Using their pharmacy would be wonderful. They have some of the finest produce here in town. Not all of us are “high end” here in Summerlin.

If we can now have a Savers, why not a Super Walmart? Stop with all the little specialty stores that are closing up, and we keep building more. Let’s get a Super Walmart!
