Updated September 10, 2021 - 3:54 pm

A 78-year-old man died in a crash Thursday morning in central Las Vegas.

Officers were called at 10:49 a.m. to Flamingo and Lindell roads after a crash involving a 2005 Toyota Rav4 and a 2004 Nissan 350z, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police Department.

Investigators believe the Nissan was eastbound on Flamingo with a green light when the driver of the Toyota, a 78-year-old Las Vegas man, attempted to turn left.

Police said the driver of the Toyota was not wearing a seat belt and he was thrown from the SUV.

Both drivers were taken to University Medical Center. Police later said the Nissan driver, a local 22-year-old, suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the Toyota, Iliya Stefanov Minchev, died at the hospital, according to the Clark County coroner’s office.

Impairment is not suspected, but police believe “excessive speed” was involved.
