Off-duty Metro officer strikes, kills pedestrian in Las Vegas

Updated May 21, 2019 - 3:57 pm

An off-duty Las Vegas police officer was the driver who struck and killed a 62-year-old Las Vegas man in the west valley late Monday, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Trooper Travis Smaka said in a news release that the department was investigating the 11:08 p.m. crash at West Sahara Avenue and South Decatur Boulevard.

A white Dodge Challenger driven by an unnamed off-duty Metro officer was northbound on Decatur approaching Sahara in the far right travel lane, Smaka said. A pedestrian was in the travel lane, not in a crosswalk.

The driver of the Dodge turned left to avoid the man, however, the right front of the car struck him.

The Clark County coroner’s office on Tuesday afternoon identified the man as 62-year-old Howard Moody. His death was ruled an accident due to multiple blunt force injuries, the coroner’s office said.

Moody was taken to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Impairment was not suspected.

The Highway Patrol and Metro have an agreement that troopers investigate fatal crashes involving Metro personnel and Metro investigates fatal crashes involving troopers, Smaka said in the release.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
