Police staging DUI checkpoint in northwest valley

Police say they’ll be looking out for drunken or drugged drivers at a DUI checkpoint in northwest Las Vegas.

The sobriety checkpoint is being staffed between 7 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday on Lake Mead Boulevard east of Buffalo Drive.

Police are staging the checkpoint in the northwest because they’ve counted 175 drug or alcohol-related violations in the past 90 days.

Authorities say drug recognition expert officers will be on hand to evaluate drivers.

The checkpoint is partially funded by a Joining Forces Grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety. That money is funding a DUI van and technicians to collect blood samples.
