Rain expected to clear before fireworks

Afternoon showers Wednesday threatened to put a damper on Fourth of July fireworks.

Wind gusts reached 40 mph in some parts of the valley as the rain, which extended from Beatty to Lake Havasu City, Ariz., entered the Las Vegas Valley. Muggy, humid temperatures dipped from mid-90s earlier in the day to high 70s.

Brian Fuis, a spokeman for the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, said the southwest winds were dying down and that showers “should diminish throughout the course of the evening.”

The back edge of the monsoonal system is expected to pass through Las Vegas in the next three to four hours, he added.

Most of the fireworks displays around the valley are scheduled to begin about 9 p.m.
