ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY PLANS STAR PARTY AUG. 25
The Las Vegas Astronomical Society plans to have member telescopes available for night sky viewing from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Visitor Center at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, 1000 Scenic Loop Drive.
Bring your own telescopes or binoculars if you have them, as well as chairs for comfort and snacks. Dress for the weather.
The program will be held in and around the Visitor Center. Participants must arrive by 8 p.m., as the gates will be locked at this time.
The event is for all ages.

ANNUAL VIVA BIKE VEGAS SCHEDULED FOR SEPT. 22
The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada has announced the RTC 2012 Viva Bike Vegas Gran Fondo is set for Sept. 22 on the Strip.
This year, the RTC has partnered with Interbike, one of the largest bicycle trade events in North America. The 2012 Interbike is set for Sept. 17-21 at the Sands Expo Center, and the RTC 2012 Viva Bike Vegas Gran Fondo will take place following the show.
The RTC 2012 Viva Bike Vegas Gran Fondo will feature three routes: 118-, 72- and 17-mile courses. The routes take riders from the Strip to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and the trails near Lake Mead National Park. Century and 72-mile riders will have the opportunity to ride over Hoover Dam.
Proceeds from Viva Bike Vegas will benefit local charities such as After-School All-Stars Las Vegas, Nevada Cancer Institute and Communities in Schools of Nevada.

MR. OLYMPIA WEEKEND SET TO COME TO THE OLREANS
Joe Weider’s Mr. Olympia Weekend 2012 is scheduled for Sept. 28-30 at The Orleans Arena, 4500 W. Tropicana Ave.
The fitness, bikini and Ms. Olympia finals are set for Sept. 28; figure 212 and Mr. Olympia finals are set for Sept. 29; and the Superstar Seminar Gala is set for Sept. 30.

Registration is open for summer youth camps (ages 6-15) at a variety of locations. Camp hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, through Aug. 24.
The cost is $75 per child for the week and $70 for each additional child in the family.
Summer camps will promote fun, fitness, adventure and education in a safe and friendly atmosphere. Registration will close when the programs are full. All locations will have limited enrollment. Contact each site for details. The locations are as follows:

SWIMMING LESSONS AVAILABLE FOR VALLEY RESIDENTS
Las Vegas Swim Academy, 6017 Fawn Ave., has begun registration for swimming lessons. Private, semiprivate, Baby & Me and swim team groups are available.
Baby & Me classes are scheduled at 5 p.m. Wednesdays, Aug. 29 through Oct. 17
All Baby & Me classes are 30 minutes long. Class size ranges from four to six students. The cost is $100 for eight classes. The pool is heated to more than 90 degrees.

FIND ALTERNATIVE CAMPING SITES AT RED ROCK CANYON
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area’s developed campground, Red Rock Campground, is scheduled to close temporarily through Aug. 30 during this low-usage period.
Red Rock Campground is in the conservation area approximately two miles east of the Visitor Center on state Route 159 (West Charleston Boulevard) and is the only developed campground within the conservation area.
Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the many other camping opportunities in the area, including: backcountry camping at Red Rock Canyon with a permit, 515-5050; Valley of Fire State Park, 397-2088; Lake Mead National Recreation Area, 293-8990 or 293-8906; Death Valley National Park, 760-786-3200; Mojave National Preserve, 760-252-6100; U.S. Forest Service Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, 515-5400; Spencer W. Kimball Scout Reservation, 968-8138; Potosi Pines Camp, 875-1980; and the Clark County Shooting Park, 455-2000.
Camping is allowed on Bureau of Land Management land outside of the Las Vegas Valley for up to two weeks without charge. Popular primitive (no facilities) sites include Bitter Spring Back Country Byway, Gold Butte Back Country Byway, Knob Hill, Virgin Mountains, Christmas Tree Pass and Logandale Trails System.
The BLM reminds residents that summer is the dry season and to be careful with campfires.
PROGRAM OFFERED FOR ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES
New A.G.E., a program for people 22 or older with developmental disabilities, is set for 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. through Friday at the Centennial Hills Active Adult Center, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive. The program offers a variety of activities and special events that promote individuality, self-esteem and independence.
The location will be closed for staff development days.
The cost is $21 for one to three days, $28 for four days and $35 for five days each week.

BEAT THE HEAT WITH SKATE SCHOOL
The Fiesta Rancho SoBe Ice Arena plans to offer ice skating lessons or brush-up tips this summer at 2400 N. Rancho Drive.
Skate school is open to anyone 3 or older.
The fee is $70 per month, which includes one lesson each week and four public ice skate sessions per month.

SHOOTING COMPLEX HOSTS NIGHT SHOOT
Take aim under the stars during night shooting planned until 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights through Sept. 27 at all ranges of the Clark County Shooting Complex, 11357 N. Decatur Blvd.
Public shooting other days is as follows: Rifle-Pistol Range is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday through Sunday; Shotgun and Archery Ranges are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.

COED YOUTH FALL FLAG FOOTBALL AVAILABLE
Registration for coed youth flag football is open through Aug. 30 for those ages 6 to 14. Play is set for Saturdays beginning in September at the Cimarron Rose Community Center, 5591 N. Cimarron Road; the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave.; and the Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center, 101 N. Pavilion Center Drive. The cost is $75 per child. It includes a jersey, award and all practices and games.

The Lorenzi Adaptive Recreation Program for people ages 7 to 22 with disabilities is set from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday at the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave. Participants can try a new recreation experience every week, community outings, sports, games, arts and crafts, swimming, movies and make new friends.
