LIFESTYLE WALK SET FOR SATURDAY

The public is invited to join Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman as she leads the charge to improve residents’ health at her first Get Movin’ with Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman healthy lifestyle walk, which is set for 8 a.m. Saturday at the Kellogg-Zaher Sports Complex, 7901 W. Washington Ave. The event is free, and registration is set for 7:30 a.m.

Participants can start their day with an invigorating 1.71-mile walk and stay for a fun day in the park. Pets on a leash are welcome. Free light, healthy refreshments will be available for participants while supplies last.

The Mayor’s Healthy Lifestyle Initiative, found at gethealthylasvegas.org, consists of a three-point plan that includes diet and nutrition, a healthy, active lifestyle; and making use of city amenities such as recreation centers, parks and trails.

SUMMERLIN ROTARIANS SPRUCE UP PARK

The Summerlin Rotarians spruced up Police Memorial Park, 3250 Metro Academy Way, April 21. High on the list was landscaping the area around the memorial stone that honors law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The Rotarians repainted curbs and pavilions and cleaned the sand in the children’s play areas. They coordinated with an Eagle Scout project to refurbish the skate park.

HOSPICE TO HOST BUTTERFLY RELEASE SUNDAY AT BUCKSKIN BASIN PARK

The ninth annual John Anderson Celebration of Life Live Butterfly Release is slated for 1 p.m. Sunday at Buckskin Basin Park, 7530 Buckskin Basin Ave., at the corner of Gowan Road.

The Nathan Adelson Hospice Foundation will host the event, which allows those who have lost loved ones the opportunity to celebrate their memories and honor them.

SENIOR IDOL TALENT SHOWCASE
SET FOR JUNE 14

The city of Las Vegas Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services Department invites residents to join them as they present some of the most talented and entertaining seniors in the Las Vegas Valley in the 2012 Senior Idol Talent Showcase, set for 3 p.m. June 14 at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St.

Seniors will perform in the following categories: individual or group; vocals; dance; musical instruments; comedy; or master of ceremonies.

DIABETES CLASS COMING May 1
TO MOUNTAINVIEW HOSPITAL

An adult outpatient diabetes overview class is planned from 10 to 11:30 a.m. May 1 at MountainView Hospital, 3100 N. Tenaya Way, in the private dining room on the first floor behind the cafeteria.

The class will provide an overview of diabetes, its effects on the body, management goals and care resources. This class is for adults only.

ARTISTS 50 OR OLDER INVITED TO ENTER COUNTY fine arts CONTEST

Clark County residents 50 or older are invited to enter their original artworks in the 12th annual Celebrating Life! fine arts competition, sponsored by the Las Vegas Arts Commission and the city of Las Vegas.

Entries will be accepted between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. today and Wednesday at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St. Fine art media categories are: drawing and pastel; mixed media (2-D); painting (oil or acrylic); sculpture and ceramics (3-D); watercolor and gouache; and photography/digital photography.

There is no fee to enter the juried event. A public reception and awards ceremony is slated from 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 25 at the Charleston Heights Arts Center. The exhibition is scheduled to be displayed there May 25 through July 11. The reception and exhibition admission are free. Award-winning pieces will be on display at the City Hall Chamber Gallery from July 26 through Sept. 6.

EVENT TO HELP PROVIDE SURGERY SERVICES

The National Alliance on Mental Health Las Vegas is scheduled to host its second annual charity basketball game at 7 p.m. May 4 at Cimarron-Memorial High School, 2301 N. Tenaya Way.

The game will be between the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Crisis Intervention Team and the Harlem Ambassadors Show Team.

NAMI is an education, support and advocacy organization dedicated to improving the lives of those touched by mental illness.

DEFENDING FREEDOM MEMORIAL DEDICATION SET FOR MAY 5

The seventh annual Defending Freedom Memorial rededication ceremony is planned for 10 a.m. May 5 at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, 1000 Scenic Loop Drive. The ceremony will add names to the memorial, which honors soldiers, Marines, airmen and sailors.

EVENT TO BENEFIT JUNVENILE DIABETES RESEARCH FOUNDATION

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Hope Gala … The Art of the Cure is planned for 6 p.m. May 11 at Mandalay Bay, 3950 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

The Robert Marlon Studio has become an active participant in the Nevada Chapter of JDRF and will auction an original piece of art titled “Making Waves.” The piece was created under the artist’s direction with JDFR youth ambassadors assisting in applying layers of paint to the piece, which is a mixed-media original on canvas.

GOODIE TWO SHOES FOUNDATION RECEIVES DONATION

The Goodie Two Shoes Foundation recently announced that WOW! Wyndham Vacation Ownership and the Wyndham Consumer Finance Count on Me! Council raised more than $12,000 in the fourth quarter of 2011 for the nonprofit group.

Also, the Las Vegas chapter of Women in Construction and the Tselikis Family collected shoes and socks on behalf of GTSF. Together, they donated 34 pairs of new shoes and 65 packages of new socks.

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR 2012
HELLDORADO DAYS PARADE

Applications are being accepted for participation in the 2012 Helldorado Days parade. The parade is scheduled for 5 p.m. May 19. There is no fee to be part of the parade. Applications can be found on the city’s website, lasvegasnevada.gov, and should be sent to the city of Las Vegas, attention Esther Carter, 495 S. Main St., Las Vegas, NV 89101, no later than Monday. The first 120 applications will be accepted.

TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION NEEDS INPUT FROM RESIDENTS

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada is continuing to hold community outreach events and public hearings until May 17 to discuss the transit fare adjustments proposed by the Fare Working Group to address fiscal challenges. A 60-day public comment period is in effect to obtain community input about the fare recommendations before any decisions are made. The recommendations include modifications to transit fares for the residential market, resort corridor and ADA Paratransit service.

The public is encouraged to attend upcoming public outreach sessions to learn more about the fare proposals: 4 to 6 p.m. May 1 at Albertsons, 4850 W. Craig Road; 5 to 7 p.m. May 4 at Albertsons, 2575 S. Maryland Parkway; and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. May 9 at the Centennial Hills Transit Center, 7313 Grand Montecito Parkway.

In addition, the transportation commission plans to hold a public hearing on the proposals from 3 to 5 p.m. May 12 at the Bonneville Transit Center, 101 E. Bonneville Ave.
