Train fire causes $750K of damage in downtown Las Vegas

Updated August 8, 2021 - 9:40 pm

A fire Sunday in downtown Las Vegas destroyed a flatbed rail car, causing $750,000 of damage, according to the Las Vegas Fire Department.

Crews spotted smoke coming from a building at 926 S. Commerce Street around 10:38 a.m. and found a rail car on fire behind the building.

The Las Vegas Fire Department in a news release Sunday night that the rail car, which was loaded with building materials, may have been set intentionally, though the cause remains under investigation. Union Pacific police are assisting in the case.

Crews had the fire out in less than 30 minutes, and no other rail cars were damaged — a concern because some of the nearby rail cars were loaded with hazardous materials, according to the release. No one was injured in the fire.
