Rare June snow, freezing temperatures surprise Northern Nevada

A late spring dusted parts of Northern Nevada with snow, hail and rain on Sunday, June 7, 2020. ...

RENO — More seasonable weather is forecast to return to northern Nevada this week after an unusually cold mass of air pushed lows below freezing and dropped rare June snow on parts of the state.

The trace of snow at Elko on Sunday tied a 41-old-year record and Winnemucca reported its first snow ever — .2 inch — for the date since recordkeeping began in 1877, the National Weather Service said.

Up to an inch of rain fell Sunday in parts of Reno, where the low dropped to 35 early Monday. Other lows included 25 at Eureka, 26 at Ely and 27 at Minden and South Lake Tahoe, California.

The trace at Elko Airport was the first for that date since 1979. The blustery cold front packed winds gusting as high as 67 mph in the Ruby Valley east of Elko.

The weather service said Monday frost advisories may continue in parts of eastern Nevada into Tuesday morning, but drier conditions are expected with temperatures into the upper 70s with lighter winds. Later this week, highs should reach into the 80s to around 90 before another cold front approaches this weekend.
