Valley experiences quick change, warm sunshine to chilly overcast

After enjoying sunshine and record-breaking temperatures for most of February, Las Vegans awoke to 50 shades of gray Sunday morning.

“Cloudy skies are going to last all day,” National Weather Service meteorologist Justin Pullin said.

Punxsutawney Phil, the infamous Groundhog Day groundhog, predicted six more weeks of winter Feb. 2 when he saw his shadow.

But the valley has seen spring-like weather for much of the month.

According to the National Weather Service, last Monday marked the thirteenth consecutive day that Vegas reached at least 70 degrees, which tied the February record set in 1996.

“A few changes are on the way,” the NWS tweeted Friday.

The valley can expect to see up to a quarter-inch of rain through Monday morning, when Pullin says conditions will improve.

“Roads will be wet,” Pullin said, warning commuters who will be impacted.

The heaviest rainfall in Las Vegas will be around 10 p.m. Sunday, Pullin said.

A winter storm watch began 4 a.m. Sunday and will last until 4 p.m. Monday. It could bring three to five inches of mountain snow, according to the NWS.

Originally expected to only affect Esmeralda, Nye and Lincoln counties, the warning was expanded Saturday to include the Spring Mountains and Kyle, Lee Canyon roads.
