Vegas to hit 108 Thursday; more cooling stations open
June 18, 2015 - 12:04 pm
With Las Vegas temperatures expected to hit 108 degrees for the second consecutive day Thursday, 11 daytime cooling stations — in addition to three daytime shelters — were made available through Monday for those with no access to an air conditioner.
The valley was a toasty 94 degrees about 9:30 a.m., meteorologist Clay Morgan said. It’s expected to rise to 108 about 3 p.m.
An excessive heat warning will be in place from Thursday morning until 11 p.m. Monday, Morgan said Wednesday. Temperatures are forecast to reach “dangerous levels that will stress the body if precautions are not taken.”
The North Las Vegas Fire Department issued precautions on how to deal with the heat.
Capt. Cedric Williams recommended Las Vegans to stay indoors if they don’t need to be outside. He said babies, toddlers, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses are more at risk during the hottest parts of the day. He said everyone who plans to be outdoors should wear light clothes, sunglasses and constantly apply sunscreen.
More importantly, everyone should drink plenty of water, flavored and vitamin sports drinks that contain electrolytes, he said, noting that includes melons, which are mostly made up of water. Alcoholic drinks, sodas and coffee should be avoided, Williams said.
Clark County announced the opening of the summer day shelters and daytime cooling stations around the valley from Thursday to Saturday and Monday.
