Looking ahead at the week in high school sports

Here is a look at some of the week’s top high school sports events.

BASEBALL

Tuesday — Tech at Desert Pines, 3:30 p.m.

Both teams have had strong moments early during Class 3A season. The Roadrunners are coming off a runner-up finish in the Cowboy Classic. Juan Castaneda will try to lead the Jaguars to a win in this nonleague tuneup.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday — Spring Valley vs. Durango

This Southwest League series features a pair of teams currently in holding the league’s final two playoff spots. The teams will play Monday at Spring Valley before heading to Durango for the final two games.

Wednesday — Las Vegas at Foothill, 3:30 p.m.

Foothill has gotten off to a strong start in the Sunrise League with a 4-2 record. Las Vegas has struggled more, and currently is tied for the eighth and final playoff spot in the league.

Friday — Coronado at Basic, 3;30 p.m.

The first of two big Sunrise League challenges for the defending state champion Wolves. Coronado is just 1-2 in league, but the Cougars should finish among the league’s top teams.

Saturday — Basic at Rancho, noon

The Wolves travel to Rancho, with first place in the league potentially on the line. Rancho is off to a 6-1 start in league play, while Basic is 4-1.

BOYS GOLF

Tuesday — Northwest League Match at Painted Desert, 11 a.m

Defending state-champion Palo Verde has started off the year hot, and will play a tough league match.

SOFTBALL

Friday — Coronado at Basic, 3:30 p.m.

Teams haven’t had much success when Shelby Basso is in the circle for the Wolves, but they have not had a challenge like the defending Sunrise Region champions.

Friday — Silverado at Green Valley, 3:30 p.m.

The Gators are coming off a strong showing in the Mountain Lion/Blazer Classic, and the Skyhawks are trying to show their strong start to the year was no fluke.

SWIMMING

Saturday — Foothill vs. Coronado at Heritage Park, 8 a.m.

The Cougars won both the boys and girls Sunrise Region titles last season, and will face a Henderson rival. Foothill’s boys and girls both have easily won their two dual meets this season.

TRACK AND FIELD

Friday — Richard Lewis Invitational at Overton, 2:30 p.m.

Moapa Valley’s annual invitational will begin with field events at 2:30 and running events at 3 p.m. Twenty-one teams have registered, including 2017 champs Arbor View (boys) and Green Valley (girls).

Saturday — Western Invitational, 9 a.m.

The Warriors host a 16-team meet which includes defending Class 3A boys state champion Sunrise Mountain.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Tuesday — Basic at Foothill, 6 p.m.

The Class 4A Sunrise League opener for both squads. Basic is off to a 9-3 start, while Foothill is 8-4.

Friday — Shadow Ridge at Centennial, 6 p.m.

Two of the area’s best face off in a Sunset League matchup. Centennial is 24-4 and hasn’t lost to a Nevada school yet. Shadow Ridge is off to a 14-1 start. Both teams are 1-0 in the league.
