Looking ahead at the week in high school sports
The spring sport season begins this Thursday. Here is a look at some of the week’s top high school sports events.
BASEBALL
Thursday-Saturday — Diamondback Kickoff Tournament
Desert Oasis will host it’s annual season-opening tournament, featuring some of the area’s top teams. Along with the Diamondbacks, Centennial, Palo Verde, Rancho, Arbor View, Green Valley and Sierra Vista will participate.
Thursday’s game will be at Rancho, Desert Oasis and Centennial. On Friday, games will be played at Desert Oasis, Palo Verde, Green Valley and Centennial.
Saturday’s semifinals and championship will be at Desert Oasis, with the final scheduled for 3 p.m. Consolation games also will be played at Green Valley on Saturday.
Thursday-Saturday — Bengal Kickoff Tournament
Bonanza’s opening-weekend tournament will feature the Bengals, Silverado, Durango, Faith Lutheran, Legacy, Spring Valley, Shadow Ridge and Boulder City.
Teams will play single games at host sites on Thursday and Friday, with doubleheaders on Saturday.
Thursday-Saturday — Sundevil Invitational
Eldorado’s tournament will feature pool play on Thursday and Friday with games at Eldorado and Chaparral. Along with the Sundevils, Chaparral, Mojave, Clark, Lincoln County, Tech, Desert Pines and Canyon Springs will participate.
Teams advance to a single-elimination championship bracket on Saturday.
GOLF
Thursday — Pahrump Valley Invitational at Mountain Falls, 10 a.m.
The Trojans finished second in region and fifth at state last year, and host a tournament to kick off the 2018 campaign.
SOFTBALL
Thursday-Saturday — Tournament of Champions at Bullhead City, Arizona
Defending state champion Palo Verde and Sunrise Region champion Coronado headline the top tournament of the weekend. Shadow Ridge, Centennial, Foothill and Basic will also be participating.
Thursday-Saturday — Battle of the Bats at Rancho
Rancho made the state tournament last season, and will open up its season in a big early-year tournament. Spring Valley, Arbor View and Las Vegas are among the other local teams starting their season.
TRACK
Saturday — Heitkotter Invitational at Faith Lutheran, 8 a.m.
The annual kick-off to the track season, boys and girls teams from across the valley head to the home of the Crusaders. Centennial won the boys and girls championships last year.
VOLLEYBALL
Friday-Saturday — Las Vegas Invitational
Shadow Ridge, Coronado and Centennial host the two-day tournament, which will feature Arbor View, Bishop Gorman, Durango and more.
