2A STATE: Yerington’s Garner knocks off Needles in opener

Winning pitcher Michael Garner had five strikeouts and also smacked a double as Yerington’s baseball team downed Needles, 6-2 in a Class 2A state tournament opener Thursday at Lovelock.

Jarrod Adams and Matt Jones each added a double for Yerington (27-5-1), which had eight hits.

Matt McAndrews and Mason Cisneros each went 2-for-3 for Needles (21-9). McAndrews also struck out eight in the loss.

Yerington advanced to play Pershing County (23-11) at 1 p.m. Friday, and Needles will face rival The Meadows (22-8) in an elimination game at 10 a.m. Friday.

Pershing County 6, The Meadows 3 — At Lovelock, Pershing County used a grand slam in the fifth inning break open a 2-2 game and coast to the win.

Justin Diamond had two RBIs for The Meadows, and Garrett Gosse added an RBI double.
