3A HONORS: Eagles’ Hernandez breaks through, earns league MVP

Michael Hernandez had a breakout season for Boulder City’s baseball team in 2011.

It was only a teaser for the senior season he had in store for 2012.

Coaches recently voted Hernandez, a senior outfielder, the Class 3A Southern League Most Valuable Player.

Hernandez batted .413 with a home run and 21 RBIs as a senior, leading the Eagles (16-12) to a 7-1 league record and the top seed in the 3A Southern League tournament.

Coach of the Year went to Moapa Valley’s Justin Williams, who guided the Pirates (10-21) to the league tournament title and the program’s first state tournament bid since 2001.
