BASEBALL: Bonanza edges Spring Valley in nine innings
Bonanza’s baseball team gunned down a runner at the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning to end the game and preserve a 2-1 road victory over Spring Valley on Monday.
Jaxson Otis doubled to right-center field. Bonanza’s Torren Brozovich fired a relay to shortstop Jay DeSoto, who gunned down Nick Rupp at the plate to end the game.
The Bengals took the lead in the top of the ninth when Julian DeLeon scored on an error. DeLeon walked to lead off the inning, went to second on a single by Lucas Rosenblatt and to third on a sacrifice bunt by Xavier Miller before scoring on the two-out error.
Luis Lares got the win for the Bengals. Lares allowed one run on seven hits over eight innings. He struck out six and walked four.
Rupp went 3-for-5 for the Grizzlies. He also allowed one run on three hits over 6⅓ innings. Rupp fanned 11 and walked four.
Jonathan Bakken added two hits, including a triple, for Spring Valley.
Silverado 11, Basic 5 — At Basic, Dax Fellows was 4-for-5 with a grand slam to lead the Skyhawks over the Wolves.
Kevin Pindel was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs for Silverado, and teammate Nikolas Cortez went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run.
Fellows’ grand slam gave the Skyhawks a 7-4 lead. Caleb Hubbard was 2-for-5 with a double and a run for Silverado.
Basic’s Trace Evans went 2-for-4 with a double and a solo home run, and Jack Wold had a solo home run and three RBIs for the Wolves.
Rancho 6, Foothill 4 — At Foothill, Braeden Hedge’s two-run single sparked a three-run fourth inning as the Rams downed the Falcons.
Jimmy Gamboa went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Rancho.
Michael Shy allowed one earned run over 4⅓ innings to pick up the win. Gamboa struck out five over 2⅔ innings to earn the save.
Kelton McCall went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI to lead Foothill.
Bishop Gorman 11, Durango 6 — At Gorman, Jorel Hingada went 3-for-4 with a homer, three RBIs and two runs to power the Gaels past the Trailblazers.
Bryce Ruggeroli was 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs, and Ryan Sepede hit a solo home run for Gorman.
Richard Mascarenas was 3-for-4 with a solo homer and three runs to lead Durango.
Coronado 6, Eldorado 1 — At Eldorado, Jake McLean was 2-for-2 with a double, a homer and two RBIs to lead the Cougars past the Sundevils.
Landen Rowland added a double and three RBIs, and teammate Boston Mabeus had a double and an RBI for Coronado, which led 6-0 after two innings.
Hayden Cochran allowed an unearned run on four hits in 5 1/3 innings to get the win. Cochran fanned five.
Sierra Vista 9, Clark 1 — At Sierra Vista, Daymien Yohner threw a six-hitter with nine strikeouts to lead the Mountain Lions by the Chargers.
Nicholas Morice was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs for Sierra Vista, which led 5-0 after three innings.
Matthew Thompson and Matthias Blodgett each doubled for Clark.
Del Sol 7, Pahrump Valley 6 — At Del Sol, winning pitcher Phil Talamo went 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs as the Dragons edged the Trojans.
Brady Walton added a triple and three RBIs, and Chandler Miller was 2-for-4 with a triple for Del Sol.
Green Valley 15, Valley 0 — At Green Valley, Jake Empey and Ben Gephart combined on a four-inning no-hitter to lead the Gators over the Vikings.
Empey struck out five and walked two over three innings to get the win. Gephart struck out one in his inning of relief.
Frankie Fitzgerald was 2-for-2 with a double, a run and three RBIs to lead the Green Valley offense. A.J. Amelburu went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs for the Gators.
Tech 15, Western 0 — At Tech, Gabe Kermode threw a no-hitter with six strikeouts, and the Roadrunners scored 12 runs in the first inning en route to the three-inning win over the Warriors.
Kermode hit the first batter of the second inning to lose out on a perfect game.
Jayce Otis was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and two RBIs, and Chandler Gehring went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI for Tech, which benefited from six walks and four hit batsmen.
Liberty 15, Canyon Springs 0 — At Liberty, Jacob Rogers went 2-for-2 with a double, a triple and four RBIs to help the Patriots to the five-inning win over the Pioneers.
Michael Wong was 2-for-2 with a double, a triple and three RBIs, and teammate Shay Steffanich was 2-for-2 with a double and a triple for Liberty.
