BASEBALL: Castaneda, Jaguars nip Chaparral in Cowboy Classic
Juan Castaneda went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs and five RBIs as Desert Pines’ baseball team nipped host Chaparral, 16-15 in six innings in the Cowboy Classic on Monday.
Silverio Milian was 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and three runs for the Jaguars, who led 16-12 after five.
Robert O’Connor was 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two runs for the Cowboys.
Desert Pines 11, Virgin Valley 6 — At Chaparral, Vasa Hansell went 1-for-1 with two walks and three runs to help the Jaguars beat the Bulldogs in six innings in the Cowboy Classic.
Trevor Nofoa was 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs for Desert Pines, which used a pair of five-run innings to take control.
Chaparral 9, Virgin Valley 3 — At Chaparral, Robert O’Connor and Eddie Lopez each went 2-for-3 to help the Cowboys top the Bulldogs in the Cowboy Classic.
Koby Smothers and Cade Anderson each went 2-for-3 for Virgin Valley.
Canyon Springs 6, Clark 2 — At Canyon Springs, Sebastian Sotelo was 2-for-2 with a two-run home run to lead the Pioneers by the Chargers in the Cowboy Classic.
Zack Gardner went 3-for-4, and Trevor Berkemeyer went 2-for-4 for Canyon Springs.
Johnny Flores and Berkemeyer combined on a five-hitter.
Pahrump Valley 8, Valley 1 — At Eldorado, Willie Lucas went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to help the Trojans down the Vikings in the Cowboy Classic.
Parker Hart was 2-for-3 for Pahrump.
Winning pitcher Kyle Kral went the distance andallowed six hits and two walks with eight strikeouts.
Pahrump Valley 15, Tech 3 — At Eldorado, John MacDonald went 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBIs as the Trojans defeated the Roadrunners in five innings in the Cowboy Classic.
Winning pitcher Garret Lucas was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs and tossed a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts.
Eldorado 10, Valley 1 — At Eldorado, Ian Reber threw a five-hitter and went 2-for-3 with two runs to lead the Sundevils over the Vikings in the Cowboy Classic.
Gilbert Pompa went 3-for-3 with two runs, and Trevor Lavenburg was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Eldorado. Trevor Swain went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI for the Sundevils.
Mojave 15, Clark 8 — At Canyon Springs, Scott Wilson was 3-for-4 with four runs and two RBIs to lead the Rattlers over the Chargers in the Cowboy Classic.
Otto Hernandez was 2-for-2 with three stolen bases for Mojave.
Miguel Carrillo went 2-for-3 for Clark.
Mojave 6, Canyon Springs 5 — At Canyon Springs, Wilson allowed four hits over six innings to lead the Rattlers to the win over the Pioneers in the Cowboy Classic.
Hernandez was 2-for-4 with two stolen bases for Mojave.
Desert Oasis 4, La Jolla Country Day (Calif.) 2 — At La Jolla, California, Isaiah Raiano’s two-run single keyed a three-run third inning to help the Diamondbacks edge the Torreys in the Lions Tournament.
Ryley Toole allowed two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings to get the win. He struck out four. Jake Lucas struck out three in 1 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the save.
Brett Brocoff went 2-for-3 with a double for Desert Oasis.
La Costa Canyon (Calif.) 4, Silverado 3 — At Carlsbad, California, the Mavericks held off the Skyhawks in the Lions Tournament.
James Skelly went 2-for-3 with a double and a run for Silverado, which scored three runs in the top of the sixth.
Rancho Bernardo (Calif.) 7, Green Valley 1 — At Poway, California, Alika Williams was 2-for-3 with a triple, a double and three RBIs to help the Broncos defeat the Gators in the Lions Tournament.
Jamison Hill tossed a four-hitter and struck out six for Rancho Bernardo.
Matt Gilbertson was 2-for-3 with a run for Green Valley.
Serra (Calif.) 14, Sunrise Mountain 0 — At San Diego, James Reece, Jacob Cowardin and Nic Liong combined on a five-inning two-hitter as the Conquistadors blanked the Miners in the Lions Tournament.
Moapa Valley 14-2, Lincoln County 4-9 — At Panaca, Daxton Longman went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs in the opener to help the Pirates split a doubleheader with the Lynx.
Anthony Cornwall and Talan McClure each went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, and Koby Frei was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs for Moapa Valley in the first game.
In the nightcap, Nick Vincent was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI to help the Lynx salvage the split. Mike Wood was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for Lincoln County.
