BASEBALL: Coronado’s Garcia, Humphries combine for no-hitter
Adam Garcia and Dakota Humphries combined on a no-hitter Thursday as defending Division I state champion Coronado began its baseball season with an 8-0 win over visiting Legacy in the Bengal Varsity Tournament.
Garcia went the first four innings, striking out six. Humphries struck out two and walked two in the final three innings.
Sterling Saltz went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Tanner Bellamy was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs for Coronado.
Green Valley 1, Durango 0 — At Green Valley, Blake Inouye’s squeeze bunt with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning brought home Jarod Penniman for the game’s only run as the Gators nipped the Trailblazers in the Lion Kickoff Tournament.
Inouye was 2-for-3 with a double, and Cody Milner added two hits for Green Valley.
Keola Paragas went the distance, allowing just five hits and a walk and striking out 11 for the Gators.
Artie Gallegos had two hits for Durango.
Rancho 7, Sierra Vista 6 — At Centennial, Cody Suarez’s single with no outs in the bottom of the eighth inning drove in Jose Verdugo and lifted the Rams by the Mountain Lions in the Lion Kickoff Tournament.
Verdugo, who went 4-for-5 with a home run and a double, led off the eighth inning with a double for Rancho, which took a 6-2 lead into the seventh inning.
Nolan Kingham had two hits, including a home run, for Sierra Vista.
Sierra Vista 3, Centennial 2 — At Centennial, Tyler Charlton scattered eight hits in seven innings as the Mountain Lions edged the Bulldogs in the Lion Kickoff Tournament.
Kingham was 2-for-4 with a triple for Sierra Vista, which scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Jake Portaro was 2-for-3 for Centennial.
Centennial 6, Rancho 5 — At Centennial, Portaro doubled home Jacob Horton with one out in the bottom of the seventh to give the Bulldogs the win over the Rams in the Lion Kickoff Tournament.
Horton led off the seventh with a single, and finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Portaro was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and Kyle Horton went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI for Centennial.
Rancho’s Verdugo hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to tie the game.
Verdugo had three RBIs, Dylan Pletsch was 3-for-4 with a double and a run and David Modler went 3-for-3 with a double for the Rams.
Bonanza 6, Palo Verde 3 — At Bonanza, Spencer Faught spun a three-hitter and struck out four as the Bengals downed the Panthers in the Bengal Varsity Tournament.
Micah Higa was 2-for-3 with a double, a run and two RBIs, and Chris Dunn was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI for Bonanza.
Faith Lutheran 9, Rapid City Central (S.D.) 3 — At Faith Lutheran, Blake Giuliani was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI to help the Crusaders get by the Cobblers in the Bengal Varsity Tournament.
Erich Uelmen had a triple, and Logan Etherington added a double for the Crusaders, who scored seven runs in the fourth inning.
Silverado 6, Spring Valley 2 — At Silverado, Aidan Adams went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs to help the Skyhawks top the Grizzlies in the Bengal Varsity Tournament.
Vincent Taormina went 2-for-2, and winning pitcher Nick Kawano was 2-for-3 for Silverado.
Kawano tossed a six-hitter and struck out 10 for the Skyhawks.
Zane Drachler was 2-for-3 with a double and scored both Spring Valley runs.
Shadow Ridge 9, Chaparral 1 — At Shadow Ridge, Francisco Robles was 3-for-4 with a double and six RBIs to lead the Mustangs by the Cowboys in the Bengal Varsity Tournament.
Luis Giro was 2-for-2 for Chaparral.
Basic 4, Desert Oasis 1 — At Basic, Taylor Ferdinand tossed a three-hitter and struck out four to lead the Wolves by the Diamondbacks in the Lion Kickoff Tournament.
Brandon Smith and Cory Wills each went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored for Basic.
Arbor View 6, Bishop Manogue 1 — At Arbor View, Quinn Gallagher went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs to help the Aggies get past the Miners in the Lion Kickoff Tournament.
Joe Fitzhugh was 2-for-4 with a triple for Arbor View.
Gabe Gonzalez threw five shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out seven, to get the win.
Liberty 10, Basic 3 — At Basic, Preston Pavilca was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and the Patriots pounded out 17 hits to beat the Wolves.
Justin Lutes and Nick Rush each went 3-for-4 for Liberty, which scored five runs in the top of the first inning.
Jesse Keiser was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Jay Martz went 2-for-3 with a double for the Patriots.
Liberty 6, Desert Oasis 0 — At Basic, Dan Skelly threw a one-hitter to lead the Patriots over the Diamondbacks.
Skelly struck out eight and walked three. He also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Ethan Ibarra was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Josh McCollum was 1-for-2 with a homer and two RBIs for Liberty, which got two hits, including a double, from Martz.
Eldorado 10, Virgin Valley 1 — At Eldorado, Cris Andrade and Isaac Villanueva combined on a four-hitter to lead the Sundevils by the Bulldogs in the Sundevil Invitational.
Jose Pedroza and Carlos Lopez each went 2-for-3, and Trevor Swain was 2-for-4 with a double for Eldorado.
Mojave 16, Virgin Valley 0 — At Eldorado, Ryan Lawrence tossed a five-inning one-hitter and struck out five as the Rattlers routed the Bulldogs.
Lawrence was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs.
Alex Smith was 2-for-2 with a double and four RBIs, and Cory Tobin went 2-for-4 with four RBIs for Mojave.
Mojave 8, Eldorado 5 — At Eldorado, Ty Williams went 3-for-3 and scored two runs as the Rattlers beat the Sundevils in five innings in the Sundevil Invitational.
William Harris was 2-for-3 with a run for Mojave.
Smith and Tyson Goodrich combined to allow just one hit.
Cimarron-Memorial 11, Snow Canyon (Utah) 9 — At St. George, Utah, Trevor Lippard went 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs and two RBIs to lead a 17-hit attack that propelled the Spartans past Snow Canyon.
Niko Decolati and Adam Mitchell each went 3-for-5 with an RBI for Cimarron, which trailed 5-2 after three innings before rallying for the win.
Logan Bottrell and Micquel Robinson both went 2-for-5 with an RBI for the Spartans.
Tech 10, Canyon Springs 0 — At Canyon Springs, Abel Martinez tossed a four-hit shutout and struck out 10 to lead the Roadrunners by the Pioneers.
Martinez also went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Logan Campbell was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, and Elijah Robertson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs for Tech.
Jordan Gainey was 3-for-4 with a double for Canyon Springs.
Tech 15, Canyon Springs 1 — At Canyon Springs, Gizele Cascos tossed a five-inning three-hitter as the Roadrunners routed the Pioneers.
Jasmine Ramos homered and Emmalyne Laymon was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for Tech.
Del Sol 12, Valley 2 — At Valley, Nick Trujillo tossed a five-inning two-hitter with four strikeouts to lead the Dragons by the Vikings.
Jason Rolland, Christian Wallace and Danny Maloney each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Del Sol.
