BASEBALL: Juan Castaneda helps Desert Pines edge Del Sol
Juan Castaneda doubled home the go-ahead run and pitched a complete game to lead the Desert Pines baseball team to a 2-1 road win over Del Sol on Thursday.
Castaneda’s two-out double in the top of the sixth drove in Salvador Becerra to make it 2-1.
Castaneda finished 2-for-3. He also threw a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts and two walks. Del Sol’s run was unearned.
Tyler Foreman went the distance for Del Sol, allowing seven hits and striking out four.
Eldorado 3, Las Vegas 1 — At Eldorado, Jordan Eldred’s two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning lifted the Sundevils over the Wildcats.
The two-out rally started after consecutive singles by Mario Gonzalez and Miguel Rodriguez.
Eldred also threw a four-hitter with six strikeouts to pick up the victory.
David Campbell doubled for Las Vegas.
Green Valley 6, Rancho 3 — At Rancho, Matt Gilbertson belted a grand slam for the go-ahead runs in a six-run seventh inning as the Gators rallied to defeat the Rams.
A.J. Amelburu was 3-for-4 with a double, and Drake Maningo went 2-for-2 for Green Valley, which trailed 3-0 going to the seventh.
Gilbertson’s grand slam gave the Gators a 6-3 lead.
Miguel Elicerio had an RBI single, and teammate Anthony Guzman tripled to pace Rancho.
Pahrump Valley 4, Tech 2 — At Tech, Josh Ferrer struck out six over five innings to earn the win, and Bradda Costa pitched two innings of relief to earn the save as the Trojans held off the Roadrunners.
Willie Lucas was 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, and Parker Hart doubled for Pahrump, which scored two in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Trevor Kephart, Oscar Reynoso and Sean Jones each doubled for Tech.
Chaparral 9, Cheyenne 1 — At Chaparral, Connor Jarvis allowed one run on two hits and struck out five to lead the Cowboys in a rout of the Desert Shields.
Jacob Mauro doubled and drove in two runs, Jarvis doubled and Robert O’Connor went 2-for-4 for the Cowboys.
Titus Quintanilla and Zach Childress each doubled for the Desert Shields.
Spring Valley 16, Clark 0 — At Clark, Humberto Maldonado was 2-for-3 with a double, four RBIs and three runs to power the Grizzlies by the Chargers in four innings.
Braxton Bruschke went 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI for Spring Valley. Jack Sellinger and Kade Higgins each supplied two hits and two RBIs for the Grizzlies.
Bryce Bullock threw a two-hitter and struck out five to earn the win for Spring Valley.
Brendan Palmer and Guy Tannenbaum each had a hit for Clark.
Moapa Valley 10, Mojave 4 — At Overton, Daxton Longman went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Pirates past the Rattlers.
Jade Marshall allowed four runs on three hits and fanned six in four innings to earn the win.
Virgin Valley 9, Sunrise Mountain 4 — At Mesquite, three pitchers combined on a no-hitter as the Bulldogs beat the Miners.
Cade Anderson threw four hitless innings with six strikeouts and one walk to get the win.
Dakota Munford threw two hitless innings, and Dillan Fuqua pitched the seventh for Virgin Valley.
Virgin Valley scored nine runs in the first two innings, and had three two-out RBIs.
Lincoln County 24-15, Adelson School 2-0 — At Panaca, Hunter Wilkin went 5-for-5 and earned a pitching victory as the Lynx earned a pair of three-inning wins.
Wilkin allowed two runs five hits in the first game with seven strikeouts to get the win. Wilkin was 3-for-3 with a double, and Dean Ottley went 2-for-2 with a triple and an inside-the-park homer in the opener.
Alex Vincent was 3-for-3, and Tommy Rowe and Tristan Davis each went 2-for-2 in the first game. Walker also went 2-for-2, and Ottley was 2-for-2 with a triple. Rowe went 2-for-2 with a double for Lincoln County.
In the second game, Wilkin went 2-for-2, and Kobe Walker threw a four-hitter with five strikeouts.
Lake Mead 17, Calvary Chapel 3 — At Mountain View, Ryan Kennedy was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, two RBIs and three runs to power the Eagles over the Lions in the Spring Slam.
Mitch Dolinar supplied two RBIs and two runs for Lake Mead, which scored eight runs in both the first and second innings.
Kade Sellers doubled for Calvary Chapel.
Calvary Chapel 14, Mountain View 0 — At the Spring Slam at Mountain View, Jesse Interrante was 3-for-4 with three RBIs as the Lions routed the Saints in four innings.
Kade Sellers went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a stolen base for Calvary Chapel, which scored six runs in the first and fourth innings. Isaiah Jimmerson supplied two hits and an RBI for the Lions, who got the win on the hill from Ryan Carroll.
The Meadows 3, Indian Springs 2 — At Mountain View, Adam Martinez was 2-for-3 with a triple, and the Mustangs rallied for two runs in the third inning to top the Thunderbirds in the Spring Slam.
Nino Alvarez was 1-for-2 with a run for Indian Springs.
Indian Springs 4, Laughlin 1 — At Mountain View, the Thunderbirds scored twice in the fourth and twice in the sixth to top the Cougars in the Spring Slam.
Wrench Perry was 1-for-1 with a run and an RBI for Indian Springs.
Coda Abatti went 2-for-2, and Tyrell Gonzalez was 2-for-3 with a run for Laughlin.
Bishop’s School (Calif.) 12, Laughlin 0 — At Mountain View, the Knights used a nine-run third inning to down the Cougars in the Spring Slam.
Tyrell Gonzalez and Andrew Braaksma singled for Laughlin.
Sandy Valley 15, GV Christian 5 — At GV Christian, Seth Isola threw a six-hitter as the Sidewinders topped the Eagles in six innings.
