BASEBALL: Klein helps Patriots edge Wildcats
Jacob Klein singled down the left-field line to score Preston Pavlica with the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh, and Liberty’s baseball team held on for a 5-4 road victory over Las Vegas.
Klein also threw 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to get the win and went 2-for-4 with a run.
Pavlica was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs, and Brandon Soratos and Justin Lutes each added two hits for the Patriots.
Parker Lowe and Noah Ponce each provided an RBI single for Las Vegas.
Desert Pines 6, Virgin Valley 3 — At Mesquite, Jose Avelino hit a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to break and 3-3 tie and lift the Jaguars over the Bulldogs.
Juan Castaneda led off the inning with a single, and advanced to second when Tony Fields walked to set up Avelino’s game-winning homer.
Avelino was 3-for-5 with a double and five RBIs, and pitcher Andres Corbett tossed a six-hitter with five strikeouts and two walks for Desert Pines.
Sergio Pacheco had two singles for Virgin Valley.
Chaparral 2, Moapa Valley 1 — At Chaparral, Antonio Vara scored from second on an error by the shortstop with one out in the bottom of the eighth to give the Cowboys the win over the Pirates.
Mark O’Connor was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief .
Talan McClure went 2-for-3 with an RBI double for Moapa Valley. Koby Frei and Chaz Cornwall each added two hits for the Pirates.
Desert Oasis 7, North Medford (Ore.) 6 — At Desert Oasis, Chase Adams struck out two of the four batters he faced to help the Diamondbacks hold off the Black Tornado.
Cade Adams was dominant on the mound over the first six innings, allowing no runs. He struggled in the top of the seventh, failing to record an out as North Medford plated four runs.
Reliever Bryson Stott then allowed two runs on two hits before Chase Adams came on to record the final three outs and preserve the win.
Stott went 1-for-3 with a double and a RBI. Gage Ventura was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, and Brett Brocoff drove in two runs for the Diamondbacks.
Canyon Springs 4, Valley 3 — At Canyon Springs, Gustavo Hernandez singled home Roey Sellouk with no outs in the bottom of the seventh to give the Pioneers the win over the Vikings.
Sellouk, who led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple, pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.
Valley’s Alonso Osorio-Kalawe had a two-run single, and Jacob Cruz scored two runs for the Vikings.
Durango 7, Legacy 3 — At Durango, Evan Pyeatt’s RBI double in the bottom of the sixth broke a 3-3 tie, and the Trailblazers held on to top the Longhorns.
Legacy led 3-1 going into the sixth, but Durango tied the game on Andrew Ayala’s two-run double.
Pyeatt, who was 2-for-3, broke the tie, and the Trailblazers added three more runs in the sixth to pull away.
Donta Williams went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Longhorns.
Green Valley 11, Foothill 1 — At Foothill, Jarod Penniman was 3-for-4 with three runs to help the Gators to the five-inning win over the Falcons.
Jarrett Perns was 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and a run, and Eric Samson went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and a run for Green Valley.
Gavin Morley added a triple and two RBIs for the Gators.
Christian Straub allowed a run on three hits over four innings with five strikeouts to get the win.
Parker Cole had an RBI single for Foothill.
Bishop Gorman 16, Boulder (Colo.) 6 — At Tucson, Ariz., Grant Robbins was 4-for-4 with four RBIs to help the Gaels to the five-inning win in the semifinals of the Chris Moon Cherry Field Classic.
Marques Paige had a three-run homer, and Cadyn Grenier, Beau Capanna and Blake Sanchez each drove in two runs for Gorman.
The Gaels play Tucson, Ariz., in the championship game on Friday.
Silverado 15, Eldorado 3 — At Eldorado, Vincent Taormina went 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs to help the Skyhawks to a six-inning win over the Sundevils.
Payton Ballard went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs, and Dillon Johnson doubled for the Skyhawks.
Mitchell Ballard allowed one earned run on four hits over four innings with six strikeouts to pick up the win.
Travis Bowe was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for the Sundevils.
Cimarron-Memorial 15, Palo Verde 0 — At Palo Verde, Niko Decolati went 2-for-3 with a homer, three RBIs and two runs as the Spartans routed the Panthers in five innings.
Adam Mitchell went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs, and Todd Danzeisen was 2-for-3 with two triples, two runs and two RBIs for Cimarron.
Trevor Doyle was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and teammate Luis Flores had a homer and two RBIs for the Spartans.
Three Cimarron pitchers combined on a five-hitter.
Cobi Fiechtner was 2-for-3 for Palo Verde.
Del Sol 14, Sunrise Mountain 0 — At Sunrise Mountain, Matt Styck, Cordell Bowie, Jorge Costa and Phil Talamo each drove in two runs as the Dragons routed the Miners in six innings.
Styck went 3-for-4 with a double for Del Sol, and teammate Christian Wallace tossed a four-hitter while striking out nine and walking three.
Angel Chavez hit a double for Sunrise Mountain.
The Meadows 20-13, White Pine 1-2 — At The Meadows, Nabeel Afzal had three RBIs in the opener and two hits in the nightcap as the Mustangs swept a pair of five-inning games from the Bobcats.
Andrew Martinez had three hits and four RBIs, and Adam Martinez added two hits and two RBIs in the first game for The Meadows.
Jacob Gleason and Christian Rimoldi each had two hits and two RBIs in the finale for the Mustangs.
Adelson School 9, Spring Mountain 4 — At Oxford Park, winning pitcher Ethan Finkelstein was 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs to help the Lions top the Golden Eagles in six innings.
Jack Anderson was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Adelson, which led 6-0 after two innings.
