BASEBALL: Rams rally for win in Lions Kick-Off Tournament
Jaeger McDowell scored the tiebreaking run on an infield single by Braulio Santiguin in the bottom of the sixth inning Friday to give Rancho’s baseball team a 6-5 victory over visiting Sierra Vista in the Lions Kick-Off Tournament.
Anthony Guzman and Zach Barnhart each had a two-run double in Rancho’s five-run fifth inning that tied the game.
Chayse Baker was 2-for-3 with a run for the Rams.
Jhared Gonzalez went 2-for-3 for Sierra Vista, which scored four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.
Green Valley 7, Centennial 6 — At Green Valley, Jarrett Perns was 4-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs and scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give the Gators the win in the Lions Kick-Off Tournament.
Perns led off the bottom of the seventh with a single. He stole second, and moved to third on an infield single by Jimmy Montiel.
Montiel went to second on a wild pitch and Perns came home on the throw to second.
Gavin Morely was 2-for-4 with a solo homer and three runs, and Montiel and Drake Maningo each added two hits for the Gators.
Jared Drizin was 2-for-3 for Centennial, and teammate Jake Portaro drove in three runs.
Green Valley 1, Desert Oasis 0 — At Green Valley, Blake Inouye fired a two-hitter as the Gators edged the Diamondbacks in the Lions Kick-Off Tournament.
Inouye struck out five with no walks.
Green Valley got its run in the bottom of the fourth when Maningo walked with the bases loaded to bring home Morley.
Morley started the inning with a single, Inouye walked and Montiel singled to load the bases.
Inouye was 2-for-2, and Montiel went 2-for-3 for the Gators.
Centennial 12, Basic 1 — At Basic, Portaro was 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and three RBIs as the Bulldogs routed the Wolves in five innings in the Lions Kick-Off Tournament.
Kyle Horton was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Tanner Wright went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Centennial, which scored five runs in the first and seven more in the third.
Hayden Rosenkrantz allowed six hits and struck out seven for Centennial.
Jack Wold was 1-for-2 with a double for Basic.
Basic 9, Desert Oasis 8 — At Basic, David Hudleson went 2-for-4, including a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning, to help the Wolves down the Diamondbacks in the Lions Kick-Off Tournament.
Basic trailed 8-7 entering its final at-bat, but tied the game thanks to a wild pitch before Hudleson’s bases-loaded hit.
Roger Riley was 3-for-3 with two runs, and Wold went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Basic, which scored six runs in the first inning.
Caeden Marin was 3-for-4 with a double, and Chris Van Kuren also went 3-for-4 for Desert Oasis. Teammate Brett Brocoff went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Durango 5, Bishop Manogue 4 — At Durango, the Trailblazers plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Miners in the Lions Kick-Off Tournament.
Joey Shawhan’s RBI single brought home Kenny Busse with the winning run.
Adam Niederman was 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Durango.
Durango 17, Rancho 7 — At Durango, Richard Mascaranas was 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs as the Trailblazers rolled to the six-inning win over the Rams in the Lions Kick-Off Tournament.
Busse was 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs and four RBIs, and Artie Gallegos went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs for Durango. Shawhan doubled twice for the Trailblazers.
Bishop Manogue 9, Sierra Vista 0 — At Rancho, the Miners blanked the Mountain Lions in the Lions Kick-Off Tournament.
Coronado 10, Boulder City 7 — At Boulder City, Donte Glover went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Nicco Festa went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI as the Cougars rallied to beat the Eagles in the Bengal Varsity Tournament.
Boulder City scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 6-4 lead before the Cougars answered in the top of the fifth with four runs. Jacen Yergensen and Anthony Olheiser each singled to lead off the inning, and Festa walked to load the bases. Dane Wasden then walked to bring in one run, and Chase Northrop followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the score at 6. Festa and Wasden each scored on a wild pitch to give Coronado the lead.
Nolan Desantis, Michael Morelli and Seth Kermode all finished 2-for-4 for Boulder City. Desantis, Austin Wishard and Zach Murphy each had two-run singles in the fourth inning.
Arbor View 12, Shadow Ridge 2 — At Arbor View, Ben Cutting tossed a five-inning four-hitter with four strikeouts and drove in three runs to lead the Aggies past the Mustangs in five innings in the Bengal Varsity Tournament.
Cutting went 2-for-3 with a double.
Jayce Gardner went 3-for-3 with a double, Ryan McHale went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, and Nick Quintana went 1-for-2 with a double and a RBI for Arbor View.
Dustin McDonald went 2-for-2 with a triple and drove in both runs for Shadow Ridge.
Spring Valley 4, Foothill 2 — At Spring Valley, Carter Lambeth was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Grizzlies over the Falcons in the Bengal Varsity Tournament.
Jaxton Otis was 2-for-4 for Spring Valley, and Bryce Bullock went the distance, scattering seven hits, to get the win.
Shay Landers went 2-for-3 for Foothill.
Liberty 19, Bonanza 3 — At Bonanza, Nick Woolery went 4-for-5 with a double, and Trevor Mullaney finished 3-for-4 with a double and a triple as the Patriots won in five innings in the Bengal Varsity Tournament.
Nick Rush and Brandon Soratos each went 2-for-3 with a double for Liberty, which scored 15 runs in the second inning. Preston Pavlica and Jonny Gilleres both had triples for the Patriots.
Chris Dunn and Hunter Junge each had a double for Bonanza.
Faith Lutheran 5, Legacy 3 — At Faith Lutheran, Dominic Grant allowed one run and three hits and struck out nine in six innings as the Crusaders topped the Longhorns in the Bengal Varsity Tournament.
Cruz Daddario doubled and drove in two runs, and Joshua Harmonay had a double and an RBI for Faith Lutheran, which scored three runs in the third inning and led the rest of the way.
Austin Michals had a double for Legacy, which took advantage of three walks and a hit batter to score twice in the seventh inning off reliever Kyle Poser.
Canyon Springs 4, Lincoln County 1 — At Eldorado, Johnny Flores tossed a four-hitter and struck out 10 to lead the Pioneers by the Lynx in the Sundevil Invitational.
Jordan Gainey was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Canyon Springs, which scored three runs in the first inning.
Chaparral 10, Valley 5 — Pablo Thomas went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs as the Cowboys used a seven-run first inning to down the Vikings in the Sundevil Invitational.
Erick Villareal came on in relief of Sky Espinosa to pick up the win. Villareal gave up one run and scattered two hits while striking out four over the final five innings.
Seth Miranda tripled and drove in two runs to lead the Vikings.
Tech 3, Mojave 1 — At Mojave, Sebastian Fitzgerald threw a five-hitter as the Roadrunners topped the Rattlers in the Sundevil Invitational.
Fitzgerald allowed an unearned run and struck out four.
Jalen Birch had an RBI single in the fourth to start the scoring for Tech, and teammate Chandler Gehring was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.
Tech 5, Pahrump Valley 5 — At Eldorado, Birch went 2-for-3 with a double and a run, and the Roadrunners scored twice in the fifth inning to earn a six-inning, time-limit tie with the Trojans in the Sundevil Invitational.
Jayce Otis was 2-for-4 with a double, and Gehring went 2-for-4 for Tech.
Pahrump Valley 14, Lincoln County 3 — At Eldorado, Tyler Green was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs as the Trojans beat the Lynx in the Sundevil Invitational.
Carlos Rivera was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Pahrump.
Cimarron-Memorial 6, Maple Mountain (Utah) 4 — At St. George, Utah, Trevor Lippard’s two-out, two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted the Spartans by the Golden Eagles in the Snow Canyon Invitational.
Noah Given’s one-out single started the rally in the sixth inning for Cimarron. Niko Decolati followed with a walk, and one out later, Lippard tripled to right-center. The game was called after the sixth inning on a time limit.
Lippard was 2-for-3 with a triple, a double and three RBIs, and Adam Mitchell was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Cimarron.
Cimarron-Memorial 8, Canyon View (Utah) 6 — At St. George, Utah, Given’s two-run single with no outs in the top of the seventh broke a 6-6 tie and lifted the Spartans by the Falcons in the Snow Canyon Invitational.
Larry Quaney reached on an error to start the seventh for Cimarron and was lifted for pinch-runner Trevor Doyle, who moved to second on a wild pitch. Diego Cardoso reached on an error, and Todd Danzeisen was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Given followed with a single through the right side to plate two runs.
Mitchell was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, and Lippard was 2-for-4 with a double for Cimarron, which rallied from a 6-2 deficit after four innings.
Parowan (Utah) 14-14, Virgin Valley 1-2 — At Mesquite, the Rams swept the Bulldogs in a doubleheader.
The Meadows 12, Mountain View 4 — At Mountain View, the Mustangs downed the Saints.
Pahrump Valley JV 1-2, Indian Springs 0-8 — At Indian Springs, the Trojans and Thunderbirds split a doubleheader.
