BASEBALL: Santiaguin’s seventh-inning single helps Rams edge Bulldogs
Braulio Santiaguin’s bases-loaded chopper in the bottom of the seventh inning plated Joey Walls with the winning run as Rancho’s baseball team nipped visiting Centennial 7-6 in the Lions Kick-Off Tournament on Friday.
Walls led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and moved to third on a bunt that put runners at the corners. After an intentional walk, Santiaguin bounced a single over the drawn-in infield to win the game.
The Bulldogs trailed 6-3 entering the seventh but rallied to tie the game on Garrett Holden’s two-out, two-run home run.
Edarian Williams, Anthony Guzman, Zach Barnhart and Walls each had two hits for the Rams.
Frank Sessa was 3-for-4 with a double for Centennial.
Centennial 7, Sierra Vista 6 — At Sierra Vista, Holden singled home Jake Rogers with two outs in the top of the sixth to lift the Bulldogs over the Mountain Lions in the Lions Kick-Off Tournament.
Rogers reached on a bunt single and went to second on a throwing error before scoring on Holden’s single to right field.
Kyle Horton was 2-for-4 with two homers and four RBIs to lead Centennial’s offense.
Austin Kryszczuk was 3-for-5 with two runs and a solo homer for the Bulldogs.
Sierra Vista’s Dylan White went 2-for-2 with a double and two runs, and teammate Brett Carroll was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.
Kaven Alferez was 2-for-4 with two runs for the Mountain Lions.
Rancho 8, Palo Verde 7 — At Rancho, Walls went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs as the Rams held off the Panthers in the Lions Kick-Off Tournament.
Barnhart was 2-for-2 and was intentionally walked twice for Rancho, which led 8-4 after four innings.
Palo Verde had the potential tying run on second base when Rams reliever Cassius Shy got a strikeout to end the game.
Blake Porter was 3-for-4, and teammate J.D. Brooks went 2-for-3 with two runs for Palo Verde. Sam Powers hit a solo home run for the Panthers.
Desert Oasis 17, Sierra Vista 5 — At Sierra Vista, Brent Brocoff was 3-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs to lead the Diamondbacks by the Mountain Lions in the Lions Kick-Off Tournament.
Bryson Stott was 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs, and Nic Lane was 2-for-4 with a double for Desert Oasis, which scored 15 runs in the final four innings.
Nicholas Venderberg was 2-for-3 with a double, and teammate David Perez was 2-for-4 for Sierra Vista.
Basic 14, Green Valley 0 — At Durango, C.J. Dornak threw a two-hit shutout as the Wolves blanked the Gators in five innings in the Lions Kick-Off.
J.J. Smith provided the big blow for the Wolves with a grand slam in the second inning.
Ryne Nelson went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and two runs for Basic. Jack Wold was 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and three runs, and teammate Garrett Giles went 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored for the Wolves.
Basic 11, Durango 1 — At Durango, Gehrig Timmons gave up one run while scattering eight hits over five innings to lead the Wolves past the Trailblazers in the Lions Kick-Off Tournament.
Nelson went 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and scored two runs to lead the Wolves at the plate.
Giles, Smith and Christian Santillanes each had two RBIs for Basic.
Adam Niederman, Josh Barry and Jason Salazar each doubled for Durango.
Green Valley 17, Palo Verde 3 — At Durango, Jake Leonard was 3-for-3 with four RBIs, and the Gators scored eight runs in the top of the seventh to pull away from the Panthers.
Green Valley’s A.J. Amelburu was 2-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs. Drake Maningo went 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs and three RBIs, and Matt Gilbertson was 2-for-3 with a double three runs and two RBIs for the Gators.
Brandon Bayne went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run, Frankie Fitzgerald had a double and a triple, and Gavin Morley had two hits and two runs for the Gators.
Winning pitcher Jake Empey went the distance, allowing two earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts.
Boulder City 2, Arbor View 1 — At Boulder City, Nolan DeSantis and Alec Mathis had consecutive RBI singles with two outs in the bottom of the fifth as the Eagles edged the Aggies in the Bengal Varsity Tournament.
Arbor View had taken the lead in the top of the inning when Jayce Gardner scored on a wild pitch.
Steve Wagner allowed a run on four hits in six innings to get the win. He struck out five and walked three.
DeSantis went 2-for-3 with a double, and Mike Morelli was 1-for-2 with a run for the Eagles.
Jacob Hamilton was 2-for-3 for the Aggies.
Faith Lutheran 7, Coronado 5 — At Faith Lutheran, Joshua Harmonay went 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Crusaders past the Cougars in the Bengal Varsity Tournament.
Dominic Grant picked up the win for the Crusaders, throwing 5 1/3 hitless innings. However, he walked eight, hit two batters and allowed four runs. Kyle Poser threw a scoreless seventh to get the save.
Cristian Herrera went 1-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Cougars.
Liberty 4, Shadow Ridge 1 — At Shadow Ridge, Omar Ortiz went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and two RBIs to lead the Patriots past the Mustangs in the Bengal Varsity Tournament.
Ed O’Bannon gave up one run on four hits over six innings to get the win. He struck out six with no walks. Justin Lutes pitched out of trouble in the seventh inning to earn the save.
Jayzen Ramirez and Jacob Rodgers each tripled for the Patriots. Lutes and Jacob Klein each had a RBI.
Bryson Barnes went 1-for-2 with a triple to lead Shadow Ridge.
Spring Valley 11, Highland (Calif.) 1 — At Spring Valley, Bryce Bullock threw a five-inning one-hitter with three strikeouts and went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI to lead the Grizzlies by the Bulldogs in the Bengal Varsity Tournament.
Jaxson Otis went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and three RBIs for Spring Valley. Otis’ two-run home run in the fifth inning ended the game via the mercy rule.
Jack Sellinger was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Jake Sellinger went 1-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs for the Grizzlies.
Las Vegas 11, Legacy 1 — At Las Vegas, Austin Strong tossed a two-hitter and struck out seven as the Wildcats routed the Longhorns in five innings in the Bengal Varsity Tournament.
Diego Delgado was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs for Las Vegas.
Chaparral 5, Lincoln County 4 — At Chaparral, Robert O’Connor singled home Antonio Vara with one out in the bottom of the sixth to break a 4-4 tie and give the Cowboys the win over the Lynx in the Sundevil Invitational.
Vara walked three times and scored three runs for Chaparral. Reliever Eddie Lopez struck out four in two innings of work to get the win.
Canyon Springs 8, Tech 6 — At Eldorado, Zack Gardner threw three scoreless innings with six strikeouts and added a two-run double to help the Pioneers top the Roadrunners in six innings at the Sundevil Invitational.
Jelani Baker had a two-run double as part of Canyon Springs’ four-run fifth inning.
Giovani Benuto added a triple for the Pioneers, who led 8-3 before Tech score two runs in the bottom of the fifth and another run in the sixth.
Del Sol 10, Tech 4 — At Eldorado, Jason Rolland had two doubles and four RBIs as the Dragons rolled to a five-inning win over the Roadrunners in the Sundevil Invitational.
Zach Trujillo went 2-for-2 with two RBIs for Del Sol.
Mojave 12, Lincoln County 3 — At Chaparral, Otto Hernandez was 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs as the Rattlers downed the Lynx in six innings in the Sundevil Invitational.
Scott Wilson was 2-for-3 with a double, and Elijah Glaze was 1-for-2 with three RBIs for Mojave.
Del Sol 10, Canyon Springs 9 — At Eldorado, Jorge Costa went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to help the Dragons edge the Pioneers in the Sundevil Invitational in a game shortened to four innings by the tournament’s time limit.
Mike Hutchinson was 1-for-2 with three RBIs for Del Sol, which scored eight runs in the top of the first.
Sunrise Mountain 16, Calvary Chapel 0 — At Sunrise Mountain, Daltyn Pytrysson went 3-for-3 with a double and four RBIs to help the Miners to the five-inning win over the Lions.
Jace Weaver threw a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts to get the win. He walked one.
Donavan Hansen was 1-for-2 with two runs for Sunrise Mountain.
Syracuse (Utah) 7, Cimarron-Memorial 3 — At St. George, Utah, the Titans took advantage of 10 walks and seven errors to beat the Spartans in the K.J. Harrison Classic.
Lasith Narasinghe went 2-for-3 with a run, and Richie Coughlin was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Cimarron, which allowed only three hits.
Moapa Valley 36, Virgin Valley 0 — At Mesquite, the Pirates scored in double figures in three innings and routed the Bulldogs in a four-inning game.
Osmany Cardenas had two hits and four RBIs to lead Moapa Valley.
Chase Guesman and Koby Frei each added four RBIs for the Pirates, who had 14 hits were helped by eight Virgin Valley errors.
Cardenas threw a one-hitter to get the win.
Moapa Valley 20, Valley 1 — At Mesquite, the Pirates scored 14 runs in the third inning en route to the four-inning victory over the Vikings.
Anthony Cornwall had three hits and three RBIs to lead Moapa Valley.
Lake Mead 10-7, Indian Springs 5-19 — At Heritage Park, Brock Ramsay struck out nine in five innings of work to lead the Eagles to the win in the opener.
Mitch Dolinar and T.J. Yurek each had three RBIs, and Ramsey drove in two runs in Game 1.
Devon Sickler and Austin Thomas each had two hits for the Thunderbirds.
Sickler drove in four runs in the second game as Indian Springs rolled to the five-inning win.
Ryan Frank added three RBIs and picked up the victory for the Thunderbirds, who had only six hits, but took advantage of six Lake Mead errors.
