COWBOY CLASSIC: McConnico’s double keys Cheyenne win over Sunrise Mountain
Anthony McConnico’s two-run double keyed a five-run sixth inning to help Cheyenne’s baseball team to a 9-5 win over Sunrise Mountain in the Cowboy Classic at Chaparral on Monday.
The Desert Shields trailed 5-4 entering the bottom of the sixth but tied the game when Jordan Rand’s single plated David Rose. McConnico followed with a double to bring in Antonio Chavez and Rand with the go-ahead runs. Angelo Hallenbeck and James Cummings followed with RBI singles.
George Carmona went 2-for-4 with two doubles for Cheyenne.
Cheyenne 9, Desert Pines 2 — At Chaparral, winning pitcher Cummings was 2-for-3 with a triple and a double to help the Desert Shields down the Jaguars.
Joseph Rose hit a solo home run for Cheyenne.
Luis Tlatenchi was 2-for-3 with a double, and Steven Laureano was 2-for-3 for Desert Pines.
Chaparral 13, Desert Pines 3 — At Chaparral, David Ortiz was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs to help the Cowboys defeat the Jaguars in five innings.
Mark O’Connor and Connor Jarvis each had two RBIs for Chaparral.
Sky Espinosa tossed a five-hitter and struck out six for the Cowboys.
Canyon Springs 3, Valley 2 — At Canyon Springs, Roey Sellouk fired a two-hitter to lead the Pioneers by the Vikings.
Trevor Berkemeyer was 1-for-3 with two RBIs for Canyon Springs.
Pahrump Valley 7, Canyon Springs 3 — At Canyon Springs, winning pitcher Josh Mortensen went 3-for-5 with three runs to lead the Trojans by the Pioneers.
Dylan Ault was 3-for-4 with a double, and Carlos Rivera was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Pahrump.
Zack Gardner was 2-for-3 with a double for Canyon Springs.
Eldorado 12, Mojave 5 — At Mojave, Isaac Villanueva overcame a shaky start to throw a five-hitter and lead the Sundevils by the Rattlers.
Villanueva gave up five runs in the first inning but held Mojave at bay the rest of the way. He also went 1-for-3 with three RBIs.
Cris Andrade was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Jason DeMaria was 3-for-4 for Eldorado. David Decker was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Joseph Torres was 2-for-5 for the Sundevils.
Valley 6, Tech 4 — At Canyon Springs, David Trotta had three hits, and Jacob Cruz added two hits and two runs to help the Vikings top the Roadrunners.
Trevor Kephart tripled and singled, and Sebastian Fitzgerald added two hits for Tech.
Del Sol 16, Virgin Valley 1 — At Mojave, Zach Trujillo was 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs to help the Dragons rout the Bulldogs in five innings.
Jason Rolland was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Aaron Squires went 2-for-3 with a double for Del Sol, which also got two hits from Phil Talamo.
Jayden Perkins had two hits for Virgin Valley.
Del Sol 13, Mojave 8 — At Mojave, Talamo was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Matt Styck and Trujillo each went 2-for-4 with three RBIs as the Dragons outslugged the Rattlers in five innings.
Jorge Costa was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and Cordell Bowie was 2-for-4 for Del Sol, which erased a 5-0 deficit with a 10-run fourth inning.
Chase Anderson was 2-for-2 with a double, and Brady Allen went 2-for-3 for Mojave.
