Looking ahead at the week in high school sports
Here is a look at some of the week’s top high school sports events.
BASEBALL
Monday — Liberty at Rancho, 3:30 p.m.
The Rams open Sunrise League play at home against the Patriots. Rancho is coming off a win in the Diamondback Kickoff Tournament.
Wednesday — Palo Verde at Cimarron-Memorial, 3:30 p.m.
The third game of the series between the Panthers and Spartans. Palo Verde went 4-1 in the Diamondback Kickoff Tournament, and should be in contention in the stacked Northwest League.
Thursday — Centennial at Faith Lutheran, 4 p.m.
Another key Northwest League game as the Bulldogs and Crusaders complete their three-game series. Centennial went 3-2 in the Diamondback Kickoff, while Faith Lutheran was 3-1 in the Bengal Varsity Tournament.
BOYS GOLF
Monday — Southeast League Match at Anthem, 11 a.m.
Coronado has won the last four Sunrise Region titles and figures to be a force once again in the Southeast League.
Monday and Wednesday — Palo Verde vs. Shadow Ridge, 3 p.m.
Monday will be at TPC Las Vegas and Wednesday will be at Painted Desert as the two-time defending state-champion Panthers hit the links against a Northwest League rival.
SOFTBALL
Monday — Faith Lutheran at Centennial, 3:30 p.m.
The first of a three-game set between the Northwest League rivals, it will be an early test to see who can get a jump-start on a highly competitive league.
Friday-Saturday — Torrance National Tournament at Torrance, California
Palo Verde, Coronado, Foothill, Centennial and Basic will represent Las Vegas in a national showcase in California.
Friday-Saturday — Kick Off The Season Tournament at Bishop Gorman
The Gaels host an early-season tournament, which will also include Arbor View.
SWIMMING
Saturday — Palo Verde vs. Durango at Pavilion, 1:30 p.m.
The Panthers, who have won five straight boys state titles and three consecutive girls state crowns, open their season against the Trailblazers.
TRACK
Friday — Arbor View Invitational, 3 p.m.
Thirteen teams are scheduled to compete in this early-season Invitational.
Saturday — Liberty Invitational, 9 a.m.
The host Patriots are the defending champs for both the boys and girls in this meet, which is scheduled to include 18 local teams.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Tuesday — Las Vegas at Shadow Ridge, 6 p.m
Shadow Ridge, fresh off a tournament victory in the Las Vegas Invitational, will host defending state runner-up Las Vegas in a nonleague matchup.
