Roundup: First-inning outburst keys Basic in Boras Classic title game
Basic scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning on Saturday and rolled to an 18-4 victory over Coronado in the championship game of the Borras Classic in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Garrett Giles was 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBIs, and Jesse Fonteboa went 3-for-5 with a double two runs and three RBIs to help lead the Wolves’ 17-hit attack.
John Howard Bobo was 3-for-5 with two doubles, four runs and an RBI for Basic, which led 11-0 going to the bottom of the fifth, but allowed the Cougars to score twice times to keep the game alive.
Zach Hose was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI, and Trace Evans and Nick Thompson each added two RBIs for the Wolves.
Jake McLean was 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs for Coronado. Austin Gilmore went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI for the Cougars.
Palo Verde 4, Timpanogos (Utah) 3 — At St. George, Utah, Josiah Cromwick’s two-run double in the second inning broke a 1-1 tie, and the Panthers held on to beat the Timberwolves in the Desert Hills Invitational.
Jaret Godman went the distance, allowing two earned runs on six hits, to get the win.
Peyton Cole went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Austin Raleigh was 1-for-3 with a double for Palo Verde.
Palo Verde 11, Taylorsville (Utah) 1 — At St. George, Utah, Bryce Robison fired four shutout innings and went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI to lead the Panthers to a six-inning win over the Warriors in the Desert Hills Invitational.
Nate Bartlett was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, and Tyler Kim went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Palo Verde.
Desert Oasis 12, Clark 2 — At Clark, Parker Schmidt was 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and three RBIs to lead the Diamondbacks to the six-inning win.
Cole Schaefer was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Jordan DeMarce went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for Desert Oasis. Jason Sharmon was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Diamondbacks.
Dustin Mansell allowed one hit and struck out three in three scoreless innings of relief to get the win.
Rancho 18, Valley 0 — At Valley, Jimmy Gamboa was 4-for-4 with a double, a home run, five RBIs and three runs as the Rams routed the Vikings in three innings.
Joey Walls went 2-for-3 with a triple, a homer, four RBIs and four runs for Rancho.
Chayse Baker was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and two RBIs, and R.J. Forbus went 2-for-2 for the Rams.
Anthony Guzman threw a one-hitter with five strikeouts to get the win.
Boulder City 13, Timpview (Utah) 4 — At St. George, Utah, Anthony Pacifico was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and three RBIs to lead the Eagles to the six-inning win in the Southern Utah Spring Kick-Off Tournament.
D.J. Reese went 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI for Boulder City.
Lake Mead 19, Mountain View 1 — At Mountain View, T.J. Yurek was 2-for-2 with three runs and three RBIs to lead the Eagles over the Saints in three innings in the Spring Slam.
Nolan Hairr was 2-for-2 with two RBIs, and Ryan Kennedy went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI for Lake Mead.
Calvary Chapel 15, Mountain View 3 — At Mountain View, the Lions scored eight runs in the first inning and rolled to the three-inning win over the Saints in the Spring Slam.
Pahranagat Valley 18, Wells 3 — At Alamo, Stockton Maxwell pitched a two-hitter and went 2-for-2 with an RBI and three runs to lead the Panthers past the Leopards in the Panrahagat Valley Invitational title game.
Maxwell struck out nine in the four-inning game.
Jakob Frehner went 2-for-2 with three RBIs for Pahranagat Valley.
Pahranagat Valley 19, Eureka 4 — At Alamo, Duston Stewart went 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs to help the Panthers to the three-inning win over the Vandals in the Pahranagat Valley Invitational.
Jesse Jones went 2-for-2 with a double, a triple, three runs and three RBIs, and Cody Hatch was 3-for-3 with an RBI for Pahranagat Valley.
Preston Higbee went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Maxwell was 2-for-2 with a double, three runs and two RBIs for the Panthers.
