2A BOYS: Mustangs’ Gosse stakes claim to state MVP honor
As a 6-foot-3-inch forward with a smooth shooting stroke and the ability to play multiple positions, Garrett Gosse’s importance on the basketball court is hard to understate.
But something else enabled The Meadows senior to become a dominant player.
“His biggest strength is just his ability to compete,” Mustangs coach Gary Hannig said. “Every time he took the court over the past four years, he had the desire to win. He was fundamentally solid, (but) more than anything, it was his approach.”
Gosse was rewarded for his efforts by coaches, who recently voted him the Class 2A State Most Valuable Player.
Gosse averaged 19.0 points per game as a senior, leading The Meadows (22-7) to the 2A Southern League tournament title and a spot in the state semifinals.
He had 22 points, nine rebounds and three blocks in his final high school game, a 65-62 loss to eventual champion West Wendover in the state semifinals.
“He could play anywhere from the ‘one’ to the ‘five;’ he could handle, distribute, play with his back to the basket,” Hannig said of Gosse. “He was very versatile.”
West Wendover’s Scott Carsrud was named Coach of the Year after guiding the Wolverines to their first state title since 2000-01.
West Wendover also placed Corey Bostock and Chuy Limon on the first team, along with Yerington’s Tyler Peeples, Agassi Prep’s Anson Williams and Kalinn Jackson, and Lake Mead’s Justin Yamzon.
