BASKETBALL: Gorman boys can’t contain Sierra Canyon star Marvin Bagley III in loss
Christian Popoola finished with 20 points, but Bishop Gorman’s boys basketball team couldn’t slow down Sierra Canyon (California) star Marvin Bagley III and lost 98-72 on Saturday at Santa Ana, California.
Bagley, a 6-foot-11 junior, had 42 points on 14-for-20 shooting to lead the Trailblazers, who are ranked No. 2 in USA Today’s Super 25 poll.
Bagley’s 42 points set the single-game scoring record at the Nike Extravaganza event. The previous mark of 41 was set by Gorman standout Shabazz Muhammad in 2012.
Jamal Bey had 19 points, and Noah Taitz added 14 points for Gorman.
The Gaels trailed 47-26 at halftime, as McDonald’s All-American Chuck O’Bannon was held scoreless in the first half by Sierra Canyon. O’Bannon ended with four points.
Cody Riley, a UCLA signee, had 21 points for Sierra Canyon, and teammate Remy Martin scored 14.
Findlay Prep 85, Pinnacle (Ariz.) 71 — At Phoenix, the Pilots pulled away late to down the Pioneers.
Findlay Prep led just 45-44 midway through the third quarter before extending the lead to 55-49 entering the fourth.
Trent Brown had 32 points for Pinnacle.
Lincoln County 74, Laughlin 47 — At Panaca, Justin Barton had 15 points, and Elijah Harr added 14 points to help the Lynx overwhelm the Cougars.
Kobe Walker had 10 points for Lincoln County, which had 10 players score and led 34-19 at halftime.
Corey Anderson had a game-high 23 points for Laughlin, and teammate Jermarion Hickman scored 12.
Pahranagat Valley 59, Beatty 22 — At Alamo, Culen Highbe had all 19 of his points in the first half, and Christian Higbee added 14 points in the Panthers’ victory over the Hornets.
Cody Williams finished with 10 points for Pahranagat Valley, which opened the game on a 15-0 run.
Jacob Oseguera led Beatty with 17 points.
GIRLS
Lincoln County 41, Laughlin 30 — At Panaca, Sadie Soderborg had 18 points, and the Lynx rode a 16-2 second-quarter run to a victory over the Cougars.
Brynlee Wadsworth added 12 points for Lincoln County.
Teresa Chapa led Laughlin with 16 points, and teammate Amanda Miller scored 10.
Pahranagat Valley 51, Beatty 26 — At Alamo, the Panthers pulled away in the second half and secured the Class 1A Southern League title with a win over the Hornets.
Pahranagat Valley led 26-17 at the half.
