LAS VEGAS PREP CHAMPIONSHIP: Silverado nips Cimarron after Coe’s bucket
Silverado coach Martin Ferriter thought he knew what play Cimarron-Memorial was going to draw up in the final timeout of the game Friday.
But the Skyhawks coach still had to hold his breath and wait for Kyle Skurow’s shot to roll off the rim as time expired, giving Silverado a 64-62 win in the Las Vegas Prep Championship at Las Vegas High.
“The play that they ran was exactly what we though they would do in the timeout,” Ferriter said. “We were just fortunate the ball rimmed out.”
Silverado took the lead on Kris Coe’s drive with 12 seconds to play. Cimarron’s Tony Harrison missed a drive, and Amani Gill missed two stick-back attempts before Silverado’s Isaiah Glover slapped the ball out of bounds with 0.5 seconds left.
The Spartans called timeout, and Laron Young lobbed the inbounds pass to Skurow in front of the rim, but his shot went around and out.
The Skyhawks took the lead late in the first half and were in control for most of the second half with the help of the 6-foot-8-inch Glover, who scored eight of his 14 points in the second half.
“I thought we were able to play real effective man defense,” Ferriter said. “And we were patient in our offense and we were able to enter it into the post. And once we got our post play going, we were more effective.”
Silverado held the lead until a three-point play by Gill with 1:05 left, which put the Spartans up 60-58.
Baskets by Matthew Arnold and Austin Hunt gave the Skyhawks the lead again, but Harrison hit two free throws with 19.6 seconds remaining to tie the game.
Jason Matthew finished with 10 points, and Joe Baldi had nine points and eight rebounds for Silverado, which finished second in its pool to move into Saturday’s Gold Bracket.
“I think that’s a good spot for us,” Ferriter said. “Being in the first-place bracket, we wouldn’t probably get as much out of it as the second-place bracket. That first-place bracket is going to have some teams that are extremely good high school basketball teams.”
Harrison had 27 points and 12 rebounds, and Gill added 13 points and nine boards for the Spartans, who finished fourth in the pool. Skurow added eight points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots.
