LEGACY TIP-OFF CLASSIC: Sharp free-throw shooting helps Centennial boys hold off Mojave
The Centennial boys basketball team spends most mornings working on free-throw shooting.
The extra work came in handy on Friday.
The Bulldogs went 15-for-20 from the free-throw line in the final 3 minutes, 12 seconds as Mojave tried to extend the game and notched a 75-58 victory in the quarterfinals of the Legacy Tip-Off Classic.
Centennial shot 78 percent (25-for-32) overall from the free-throw line.
“I’m happy with the kids. We shoot free throws every morning; 6:30 they’ve got to come in and shoot free throws,” Centennial coach Todd Allen said. “We’re hoping it’s going to pay off throughout the year.
“Our goal is to get to the line 20 times a game, and obviously we did that tonight. That’s a key is hitting our free throws.”
Troy Brown had 15 of his 18 points in the second half to go along with eight rebounds and six assists for Centennial (4-0). The Bulldogs will meet Wasatch Academy (Utah) in the semifinals at 1 p.m.
The Tigers are the two-time defending Utah 2A state champion and are playing an independent schedule this season.
“I know they’re very good and they have some very talented players,” Allen said. “We’ll do what we do. That’s all we can do.”
Aaron Turner had 14 points and three assists, while Darrian Traylor finished with 13 points, five rebounds and three assists for Centennial. Teammate Garett Scheer contributed 12 points and seven rebounds.
Isaiah Banks stole a long inbounds pass in the backcourt and finished with his left hand to put the Bulldogs on top 56-46 with 4:45 left in the game. Banks ended up with seven points, six rebounds and three assists.
Mojave, which was held without a field goal for nearly four minutes in the fourth quarter, never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Darryl Adams led the Rattlers with 17 points, but Centennial’s Marquise Buchanan helped limit Adams to only four points in the second half. Jordan Glenn had 13 points, and Melvin Irvey scored 11 for Mojave.
The Rattlers’ zone defense caused problems for Centennial, and Mojave trailed 40-39 after Adams stole the ball from Brown near midcourt and fed Irvey for the fast-break layup with 3:40 left in the third quarter.
Centennial answered with a 7-0 run that was capped by Buchanan’s 3-pointer he banked in with 1:31 left in the third.
“We would get a little bit of a push and a little of a lead and go up six, and they’d get six points right back,” Allen said. “We’ve just got to be more consistent and value the ball better.”
Wasatch Academy (Utah) 73, Sierra Vista 36 — Chaise Smith had 11 points in the Mountain Lions’ quarterfinal loss to the Tigers.
