Questions remain in Class 2A boys basketball playoff bracket
Friday’s boys basketball results didn’t quite put the finishing touches on the playoff picture, but they came close.
The Class 4A Sunset and Sunrise Region quarterfinal pairings are set, as are the semifinal pairings in Class 3A and quarterfinal matchups in Class 1A.
The Class 2A semifinals aren’t yet set as Saturday’s games between Lincoln County and The Meadows, and White Pine and Agassi Prep will determine the pairings.
The pairings are unofficial until confirmed by the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association.
In the Sunset Region at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday: Northwest League No. 1 seed Palo Verde hosts Southwest No. 4 Western; Northwest No. 2 Cheyenne hosts Southwest No. 3 Sierra Vista; Southwest champion Bishop Gorman hosts Northwest No. 4 Centennial; and Southwest No. 2 Durango hosts Mojave.
The Sunset Region semifinals and championship are scheduled for Feb. 18 and 19.
In the Sunrise Region at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday: Northeast League No. 1 Desert Pines will host Southeast No. 4 Coronado; Northeast No. 2 Eldorado hosts Southeast No. 3 Liberty; Southeast League top seed Foothill hosts Northeast No. 4 Las Vegas; and Southeast No. 2 seed Silverado hosts Northeast No. 3 Canyon Springs.
In Class 3A, Faith Lutheran won the Southern League title Friday with a victory at Moapa Valley and Boulder City’s win over Virgin Valley.
The top-seeded Crusaders will play Boulder City in one semifinal Thursday at Desert Oasis. Second-seeded Moapa Valley and third-seeded Virgin Valley meet in the other semifinal. The winners play for the title on Feb. 21 at Desert Oasis.
In Class 1A, Lake Mead already had wrapped up the top seed but won the Southern League title outright by topping Beatty on Friday.
In quarterfinal play at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, the top-seeded Eagles host eighth-seeded Round Mountain; second-seeded Henderson International entertains Tonopah; third-seeded Pahranagat Valley hosts Trinity; and fourth-seeded Beatty hosts Spring Mountain.
In Class 2A, Needles has locked up the Class 2A Southern League title with a 14-0 record. The other three playoff spots belong to Lincoln County, Agassi Prep and The Meadows, but the order is up in the air.
Lincoln County and Agassi Prep currently are tied for second at 9-4.
If Agassi Prep beats White Pine on Saturday, the Stars clinch the No. 2 seed. Agassi swept Lincoln County and wins a tiebreaker against the Lynx.
Should Lincoln County and The Meadows tie at 9-5 for third place, The Meadows wins the tiebreaker on beaten opponents points. The Meadows’ win over Agassi Prep on Jan. 6 gives the Mustangs the edge.
If Lincoln County wins and Agassi loses, Lincoln County will be the No. 2 seed, Agassi the No. 3 and The Meadows the No. 4.
If The Meadows wins and Agassi loses, there will be a three-way tie at 9-5.
Agassi Prep wins that tiebreaker because it went 3-1 in head-to-head games.
The tie then reverts back to a two-way tie between Lincoln County and The Meadows, which favors The Meadows. Under this scenario, Agassi would be the No. 2 seed, The Meadows the No. 3 and Lincoln the No. 4.
At least after Saturday’s games, the confusion will be removed.
