ROUNDUP: Muhammad, Gaels top Whitney Young again
Shabazz Muhammad put on a clinic late Saturday night, scoring 41 points and grabbing seven rebounds in 27 minutes of action as Bishop Gorman’s boys basketball team posted a 69-50 win over Whitney Young (Ill.) in the Nike Extravagana in Santa Ana, Calif.
Muhammad had 15 points in the first quarter, and was outscoring the Whitney Young team, 38-37 late in the third quarter.
Ben Carter added nine points and seven rebounds, and Ronnie Stanley had eight rebounds for the Gaels, who used a 29-12 third-quarter run to build a 60-39 lead.
Jahlil Okafor paced the Dolphins with 17 points, and teammate Gabriel Snider scored 11.
Gorman also defeated Whitney Young when the teams met in the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Dec. 31.
Needles 70, Laughlin 50 — At Laughlin, Michael Hills tallied 14 points, and the Mustangs never looked back after taking a 41-16 halftime lead on their way to a win over the Cougars.
Aaron Burns added 12 points, and Lewie Larrabee and Devin Truscott each scored 10 points for Needles.
Colton Hill pumped in 33 points for Laughlin.
Lake Mead 75, Lincoln County 61 — At Lake Mead, Justin Yamzon scored 25 of his 38 points in the middle two quarters, and the Eagles clinched a spot in the Class 2A Southern League playoffs by topping the Lynx.
Dylan Graham added 12 points, and Jordan Tillman scored 10 for Lake Mead, which got 12 rebounds from Caleb Pitman.
Ryan Rippetoe paced Lincoln County with 21 points before leaving the game early in the fourth quarter with an apparent ankle injury. Chandler Katschke added 20 points for the Lynx.
Round Mountain 60, Sandy Valley 51 — At Round Mountain, Serjio Chavez poured in 26 points, and Carlos Chavez added 18 points as the Knights rallied from a 25-18 halftime deficit to defeat the Sidewinders.
Mitchell Doheny added 10 points for Round Mountain, which used a 20-9 third-quarter run to take the lead.
Randal Spencer led Sandy Valley with 16 points. Brandon Hughes added 13 points, and Ryan Hagan scored 12 for the Sidewinders.
Oasis Christian 66, Trinity 39 — At Oasis Christian, Cody Ceh had 21 points, including a 13 of 18 effort from the free-throw line, to help the Bulldogs down the Thunder.
Daniel Constantini and Sam Carnicle each added 13 points, and Christian Gonzales scored 10 for Oasis Christian, which led 29-8 at the half and 46-16 after three quarters.
Kien Nguyen led Trinity with 18 points.
GIRLS
Needles 46, Laughlin 23 — At Laughlin, Abby Chandler tallied 11 points to help the Mustangs run away from the Cougars.
Needles used a 30-2 run during the middle two quarters to put the game out of reach.
Lincoln County 49, Lake Mead 29 — At Lake Mead, Lacee Babcock led a balanced attack with 11 points, and the Lynx used a 19-2 second-quarter run to defeat the Eagles.
Kourtney Gloeckner added nine points for Lincoln County.
Taylor Badua-Kono paced Lake Mead with 15 points.
Round Mountain 35, Sandy Valley 18 — At Round Mountain, Morgan Manley had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and the Knights held the Sidewinders to nine points in the first three quarters on their way to the win.
Karissa Brown grabbed 11 rebounds for Round Mountain.
Emily Stanley led Sandy Valley with nine points.
