Basic’s zone defense stifles Silverado girls

Basic girls basketball coach Teresa Gallegos calls her team’s matchup zone defense “confusing.”

After Thursday night, Silverado likely will attest to that.

The Wolves used a matchup zone that resembled a 1-2-2 to stymie the Skyhawks for almost two quarters Thursday, allowing Basic to pull away for a 56-38 home win.

“People can’t figure it out,” Gallegos said. “They think it’s all zone, but it’s really not. They can’t figure out how to get past it, and the girls know that.”

There was no arguing with the results.

After Brittany Loguidice’s drive to the basket to start the second quarter gave the Skyhawks a 15-14 lead, Silverado went 28 possessions — totaling 12 minutes, 43 seconds — before it made another basket.

In that time, Silverado was 0-for-15 from the field and committed 14 turnovers.

Basic (6-2) turned the 15-14 deficit into a 36-16 lead and never seriously was threatened.

Loguidice finally ended the drought with a runner in the paint with 3:06 to go in the third quarter.

The Skyhawks couldn’t get inside against the zone, turning it over almost every time they tried to enter the paint, and couldn’t shoot Basic out of the zone.

“The way that we have our posts turning, it frustrates the heck out of the other team,” Gallegos said. “The kids enjoy playing it. They get excited.”

Silverado (2-3) didn’t hit a field goal from outside of the key until the first minute of the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, Jayla Brown and Dana Deloney did plenty of damage for Basic.

Brown had 18 points and 16 rebounds, 10 of them offensive.

“She’s a rebound machine,” Gallegos said. “Her heart and her motivation is her big thing. She loves to get under there, get the rebound and put it back up.”

Deloney added 19 points, and Sheree McDaniel scored nine for Basic, which has won four straight.

“It’s a totally different team,” Gallegos said. “They’re having fun. They’re winning games, and the more we do that, the more confidence they’re building.”

Loguidice had 14 points, and Jasmyn Garcia added 11 points and 13 rebounds for Silverado.
