LADY BULLDOG INVITE: Campbell, Panguitch storm past Virgin Valley in title game
Tournament Most Valuable Player Chesney Campbell scored 17 points Saturday to help the Panguitch (Utah) girls basketball team to a 56-21 win over host Virgin Valley in the championship game of the Lady Bulldog Invitational in Mesquite.
Brieann Birch and Whittni Orton each added 12 points, and Taylor Bennett scored 11 for the Bobcats, who led 34-11 at the half and outscored the Bulldogs 18-2 in the third quarter.
Briana Todd led Virgin Valley with eight points.
Orton and Bennett, Virgin Valley’s Bernice Fiso and Mojave’s Charleea Armstong joined Campbell on the all-tournament team.
Tech 53, Wells 42 — Tayler Muwwakkil had 17 points as the Roadrunners broke a 37-game losing streak and downed the Leopards in the seventh-place game.
Patrice Thomas added 14 points, and Genna Biano scored 10 for Tech, which won for the first time since Jan. 21, 2014.
Sammy Stumpf paced Wells with 18 points.
Dixie (Utah) 42, Moapa Valley 40 — Kelsea Barker had 16 points, and the Flyers rallied from a 33-23 deficit to force overtime and top the Pirates in the third-place game.
Kinlee Marshall led Moapa Valley with 14 points.
Mojave 54, Sierra Vista 32 — Armstrong scored 24 points as the Rattlers defeated the Mountain Lions in the fifth-place game.
Ziggy Smith added 12 points for Mojave, which led 30-15 at the half.
Shania Harper had 12 points, and teammate Kayla Barnum scored 10 for Sierra Vista.
Virgin Valley 44, Dixie (Utah) 31 — Emma Barnum and Bernice Fiso each scored 13 points as the Bulldogs topped the Flyers in a semifinal.
Spencer Green added nine points for Virgin Valley, which led 25-11 at the half.
Barker paced Dixie with 13 points.
Panguitch (Utah) 64, Moapa Valley 37 — Chesney Campbell had 21 points to lead the Bobcats by the Pirates in a semifinal.
Orton added 16 points for Panguitch.
Tapanga Durham led Moapa Valley with 10 points.
Sierra Vista 59, Tech 34 — Kayla Smith and Barnum each scored 11 points as the Mountain Lions downed the Roadrunners in a consolation semifinal.
Danielle Morrow added 10 points for Sierra Vista, which led 25-19 at the half.
Muwwakkil had 13 points for Tech.
Mojave 51, Wells 35 — Armstrong had 22 points to guide the Rattlers by the Leopards in a consolation semifinal.
Kiara Lemon added 12 points for Mojave, which used a 31-11 burst in the middle quarters to take control.
Keegan Laughlin led Wells with 17 points.
