RECRUITING: Liberty’s Delgado commits to Oregon

Liberty girls basketball player Amanda Delgado gave an oral commitment to Oregon on Tuesday.

Delgado, who will be a senior guard for the Patriots next season, said the Ducks were the first Division I program to offer her a scholarship.

Delgado led a breakthrough season at Liberty last year, averaging 17.6 points on her way to second-team all-state honors as the Patriots went 25-5 and won the first Sunrise Region title in team history.

“He’s a legendary coach,” Delgado said of Oregon coach Paul Westhead. “My high school coaches thought it was a great fit, and my parents think it’s great.”

Delgado said she expects to make an official recruiting visit to Oregon in the fall.

Liberty coach Quintin Lester said Delgado should have an easier senior season now that the burden of a college choice is off her shoulders.

“She’s put a lot of time and work into her game,” Lester said. “The lack of recruiting pressure will help her next year.”

Delgado joins Centennial guard Courtney Hayes (Louisiana Tech) as local players to have committed to Division I programs entering their senior seasons.
