Del Sol runs its way past Valley

After a 10-2 season a year ago, expectations are certainly high at Del Sol.

Friday night, the Dragons took 425 yards worth of steps toward their lofty goal.

The Dragons scored six touchdowns on the ground on their way to a 54-26 romp over the Vikings. Del Sol had a 425-245 advantage on the ground, which impressed Dragon head coach Preston Goroff.

“It was an impressive performance by our offense,” said Goroff, whose team had two rushers eclipse the 100-yard mark. “Expectations are certainly high around here, and it was good to open the season in this fashion. Still, there is plenty of work left.”

Goroff wasn’t pleased with his team’s sloppy play, which included 13 penalties for 113 yards.

“We can’t have those many penalties and expect to win,” he said. “Valley will be a good team once they get their pieces in place. We need to keep improving each week but for a first game, I’m pleased.”

The Dragons scored on five of their first seven possessions to take a 34-6 halftime advantage. Of those five scoring trips, three were from 26-yards or closer.

Six different players carried the ball for Del Sol, led by Earnest Hall with 149 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Jon Kirschbaum added 109 yards on nine carries and Jordan Molina scored twice. Saei Huihui and Evan Weinstock each found the end zone once.

The Vikings got a huge night from Kerwynn Williams, who started the game at running back but played quarterback by the end of the game. Williams led Valley with 157 yards on 11 carries and had touchdown runs of 41 and 67 yards. He completed one pass for 13 yards and added 79 yards in kickoff returns.

Valley turned the ball over five times, compared to just one for Del Sol.
