FIELDER’S CHOICE: Double vision with two TV games this week

Get your remotes and your chips and dip ready. (Oh, and save some for me.)

High school football fans don’t just get one televised game this week; it’s a double play.

Legacy and Cimarron-Memorial hit the air Thursday, and Bishop Gorman and Green Valley will be on national TV on Friday.

One game should be close. The other one will be at Gorman.

Remember to check back Thursday night for my Friday picks. To hold you over, here’s a breakdown of the Thursday game.

Legacy (5-0, 3-0) at Cimarron-Memorial (3-1, 3-1)

Two teams with tight defenses meet, so if you like good tackling, this may be one of the few places to go this week.

Legacy — coming off a come-from-behind 63-7 win at Virgin Valley last week — hasn’t been seriously tested yet, and it’s hard to tell just how good the Longhorns are.

They’ve beaten Liberty, which is better than usual, and Arbor View, which has been a disappointment. The other three wins are against Faith Lutheran, Mojave and Virgin Valley.

I’m not saying Legacy isn’t good; I just don’t know how good. Good enough to allow only 29 points in five games; that much I know.

Cimarron has allowed only 34 points this season, and 20 of those came against Palo Verde two weeks ago.

That’s impressive enough, but consider this: Cimarron hasn’t played Mojave, Shadow Ridge or Faith Lutheran yet. Those three wins are reserved for the final three weeks of the season.

This is the last test for the Spartans in Northwest League play, and a win here would likely wrap up second place in the Northwest.

 

And as we found out last week with Durango, there’s nothing wrong with chanting, “We’re No. 2.”

This may come down to which running back — Legacy’s Deshae Edwards or Cimarron’s Stephen Nixon — has the better game.

I’m voting for Nixon. Cimarron by 4.
