FIELDER’S CHOICE: Recharging with new batteries
I’ve got a fresh set of batteries in my remote, and now I’m ready to go for another week of televised football.
And —I have to admit — Legacy and Cimarron-Memorial gave everyone else a TV game to live up to last week.
It had excitement. It had drama. It had cheerleaders. What more could you ask for?
The Bishop Gorman-Green Valley game was over shortly after it started. No drama. Unless you had a bet about how many yards Gorman would gain.
You know it’s bad when the TV reporters are interviewing a coach in the fourth quarter while the game plays on behind him.
The national exposure was great for Gorman; not so much for the Gators.

Now, it’s back to just local TV this week. And back to a game that probably won’t live up to Legacy-Cimarron standards, but I’ll still watch. Will you?
Check back late Thursday night or Friday morning — while you’re looking for something to do during class — for my Friday picks.
Valley (1-4, 1-1 Northeast) at Desert Pines (3-3, 1-1)
A quick look at Desert Pines’ results this year gives me a big clue on which way to go. The Jaguars have alternated wins and losses, with each win by at least 18 points and each loss by at least seven.
The Jaguars have a serious case of Jekyll and Hyde, which was either a book or it has something to do with cartoon birds. Like I’d know.
I do know Dalton Leilua is having a much better season this year than last, throwing for 13 touchdowns with only three interceptions.
The Jaguars’ running game doesn’t do much for me, and at times hasn’t done much for them, but this could be Chancellor Davis’ time to shine.
Valley finally showed signs of life on defense last week, holding offensive powerhouse Chaparral to 12 points. Yeah, I laughed a little when I wrote that.
The Vikings’ offensive key is Garic Wharton, who started the season as a receiver, then went to running back and is now the quarterback. They want to get him the ball in open space.
The first problem was getting him the ball. Now that he has it on every play, only the getting the open space thing is a problem.
He’ll find some against Desert Pines. Some, but not enough. Desert Pines by 18.
