Football games of the week — Week 6

(Istock/Thinkstock)

THURSDAY NIGHT LIGHTS GAME

Spring Valley at Sierra Vista — After spending two seasons in Division I-A, both programs have moved back to the highest classification (Class 4A) and will look to keep their rivalry going.

Sierra Vista won a low-scoring battle, 14-7, last season in a Thursday Night Lights game, essentially stealing a playoff spot from the Grizzlies on their own turf.

Will Spring Valley get its revenge on the road?

K.C. Moore, who threw for 1,430 yards and 12 TDs last season, will lead the Grizzlies offense.

Oscar Aliaga (1,135 passing and nine touchdowns) is back under center for the Mountain Lions, who also return Budhatt Kolone (466 yards rushing and three TDs) and Isaiah Zavala (334 yards rushing and four TDs).

GAMES OF THE WEEK

Green Valley at Liberty — These teams typically are the top football schools in the Sunrise Region, and this season should be no different.

Liberty, though, has been the region’s most dominant. The Patriots have gone 42-11, including 17-1 in league play, the past four seasons and have won the last seven meetings with Green Valley, including twice last season.

The Gators last beat the Patriots on Oct. 10, 2008.

Green Valley nearly pulled the upset in the second meeting last season, but ultimately lost, 46-35. Will 2016 be the Gators’ year?

Silverado at Basic — This game could be critical for playoff seeding in the Class 4A Southeast League.

Coronado, Foothill, Green Valley and Liberty all will be watching closely, as they also should be in the mix.

Basic won both matchups with Silverado last season, and knocked the Skyhawks out of the playoffs in the Division I Sunrise Region semifinals.

But the league’s reigning champion could have a tough time this season replacing its top athletes.
