FOOTBALL: Royal Knights grind out win over Calvary Chapel

Justin Santa Maria ran for 153 yards and two touchdowns to lead Calvary Christian of Chula Vista, Calif., to a 30-6 win over host Calvary Chapel on Saturday.

Santa Maria scored on an 8-yard run in the opening minute of the second quarter, and completed the scoring with a 79-yard run early in the fourth quarter as The Royal Knights did all of their damage on the ground, rushing for 327 yards on 41 carries. Quentin Harrison added 123 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.

Calvary Christian’s only pass attempt was intercepted.

Calvary Chapel (0-1) was within 8-6 after Riley Clark completed a 52-yard scoring pass to Christopher Basilio with 9:59 left in the second quarter, but got no closer.

The Lions also had a chance to stop Calvary Christian late in the second quarter, but a horse-collar penalty negated a 13-yard loss and kept the drive going. The Royal Knights later finished off the drive with an 11-yard TD run by Harrison, to put Calvary Christian up 16-6.

Clark threw for 163 yards on 10 of 21 passing, but the Lions were done in by missed opportunities. The Lions were stopped on downs twice deep inside Royal Knights territory, and after recovering a fumble late in the second quarter, the Lions were stopped on the Calvary Christian 1-yard line to end the half.

Basilio caught four passes for 90 yards for Calvary Chapel.

Pocatello (Idaho) 42, Spring Valley 7 — At Pocatello, Idaho, the Indians built a big lead and held off the Grizzlies (0-1) in the Rocky Mountain Rumble.

Logan Cruz’s 8-yard TD run off the right side with 32 seconds left in the game finally got Spring Valley on the board.

JSerra Catholic (Calif.) 44, Centennial 0 — At Mission Viejo, Calif., Casey Eugenio rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns as the Lions routed the Bulldogs.

JSerra blocked a punt in the end zone for a safety to start the scoring just more than five minutes into the game. Nick Robinson’s 11-yard TD pass to Dante Pettis and a 17-yard run by Eugenio gave the Lions a 16-0 lead with 2:07 to go in the first.

Eugenio added a 5-yard scoring run in the third quarter.

Centennial’s Kyle Carden threw for 120 yards.

Highland (Idaho) 41, Coronado 13 — At Pocatello, Idaho, the Rams built a 21-0 halftime lead and downed the Cougars in the Rocky Mountain Rumble.

John Farella tossed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Tanner Gorski on the opening drive of the second half and added a 5-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter for the Cougars (0-1).
