August 29, 2008 - 9:56 pm
Henderson International’s first play from scrimmage Friday was a 63-yard touchdown run.
Sandy Valley’s resulted in a lost fumble.
That about summed up the Wolverines’ 52-0 romp over the undermanned Sidewinders in a Class 1A game at Henderson International.
In its first varsity game since 2006, Henderson International rolled to a 40-0 halftime lead. Sandy Valley, in its second year of football, remained winless.
“They were ready, they were pumped up and they were ready for that win,” Henderson International running back Jay Sutorius said.
Sutorius scored three touchdowns, including the 63-yarder down the right sideline on the first snap.
The freshman carried three times for 104 yards and two touchdowns, and his only reception was a 66-yard scoring pass from Nick Powell. As a defensive back/linebacker, Sutorius added a interception and a fumble recovery.
“We look for Jay to make plays for us, just like the first play of the game where we run a sweep for him and he breaks it open,” said Henderson International coach Brett Price, who called the play the Wolverines’ “bread and butter.”
Sandy Valley had 97 yards of total offense; Henderson International had 298.
Though the Sidewinders suited up 14 players, three were limited because of injuries and two sat out.
Freshman quarterback Ryan Hagan completed 3 of 4 passes for 57 yards to earn the starting job for Sandy Valley. Junior Andrew Arista was 0-for-2 with an interception.
“Ryan’s going to be our main quarterback,” Sandy Valley coach John Craddock said. “For the long term, it’ll be Ryan.”
Henderson International signal callers Powell and Logan Christie threw one pass each — both for touchdowns.
“It’s a big win for momentum,” Price said. “School spirit was running rampant this week. It’s just good to have a good win under our belts to start the season and resurface the program.”
Moapa Valley 33, Fernley 14 — At Overton, Matt Newton caught three touchdown passes to help the Pirates down the Vaqueros.
Newton had 123 receiving yards, catching TD passes of 35, 59 and 20 yards from quarterback Max Jenkins.
Brad Weiss added two rushing touchdowns, and finished with 216 yards on 22 carries for Moapa Valley.
“It was a war out there,” Moapa Valley coach Brent Lewis said. “It was a tough, physical game out there and we outlasted them for the win.”
With the Pirates leading 7-6 in the second quarter, Fernley drove into the red zone. But Newton came up with a key defensive play, picking off a Bryce Baker pass. Newton’s 35-yard TD catch put Moapa Valley up 14-6 at the half.
A Weiss interception in the third quarter set up Newton’s second TD catch, and he added another TD catch in the fourth quarter.
Jenkins completed 9 of 16 passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns.
