Las Vegas High records another shutout victory

Las Vegas High football coach Erick Capetillo is happy about his team’s 2-0 start.

Yet, Capetillo is still unsure just how good his squad is even after recording back-to-back shutouts and scoring 96 points in two games.

The Wildcats turned in another impressive performance Friday night at home against Gateway High School of Aurora, Colorado in a 49-0 victory.

Las Vegas outgained the Olympians 412-48 including gaining 280 yards in a 28-point first half.

“The players are buying into things,” said Capetillo. “We have always had athletes here, but we needed players that thought about the front of the jersey first. It’s great to be 2-0, but we still have plenty of work ahead.”

Las Vegas (2-0) gets an early road test next Friday with a trip to Palo Verde.

Against the Olympians, though, sophomore quarterback Ja’shawn Scroggins stole the show, throwing for 204 yards, two scores and running for two more.

Las Vegas’ defense was equally as impressive in sacking Gateway quarterback Antwaun Smith four times and holding the Olympians to 41 yards rushing.

Smith only had one completion for seven yards. Gateway’s longest play from scrimmage was 22 yards, and the Olympians never crossed the opposing 32-yard line.

“Our defense is playing fantastic,” Capetillo said. “We play an aggressive style, and we want all 11 hats to run to the football. This is a good win. We will celebrate for a day and then go back to work getting ready for Palo Verde.”

Scroggins threw touchdown passes of 57 yards to Darin Akau and 29 yards to Jay Curtis. He added scoring runs of 1 and 3 yards for the Wildcats.

Cody Summer led Las Vegas with 102 yards on 13 carries and scored once.

Jonathan Broadhead recovered a Smith fumble in the end zone for a third-quarter score, and Daniel Law added a 48-yard run in the game’s final minute.
