Former Green Valley wide receiver Marquez Powell will be on the Liberty football team this upcoming school year, coach Rich Muraco confirmed last week.
Muraco said Powell, who will be a junior, moved into the zone with his family and enrolled at the school last November after the fall sports season. Powell has a scholarship offer from Hawaii, and is considered one of Southern Nevada’s top football recruits in the class of 2018.
“Marquez is a special talent,” Muraco said. “He’s a tall, athletic receiver — one that we haven’t had the last few years. He’s going to help us out, stretch the field vertically and create matchup problems.”
Muraco said the 6-foot-4-inch, 175-pound Powell will give quarterback Kenyon Oblad — a top recruit with scholarship offers from Brigham Young, Colorado State and San Diego State — another viable option in the passing game.
“We like to throw the ball,” Muraco said. “We have three kids with Division I offers at wide receiver. But we do have the ability, if we need to, to run a double-tight and pound the ball.”
Powell was an all-state honorable mention selection last season for the Gators, who lost Isiah Macklin to graduation. Macklin, a 6-5 receiver, signed with San Diego State.
