NOTES: Moapa Valley’s Tolbert nabs I-A Lineman of the Year honors
As a junior, Cody Tolbert was a solid member of Moapa Valley’s football team.
This fall, he was an impact player.
Tolbert started on both sides of the line while helping the Pirates to the Division I-A state title game, and the state’s coaches selected him as the Division I-A Lineman of the Year.
“I thought he was decent last year,” Moapa Valley coach Brent Lewis said. “The transition from last year to this year was night and day.
“He was kind of our quiet leader.”
Lewis said the 6-foot-2-inch, 196-pound Tolbert played bigger than his actual size.
“Most of the guys he was going up against usually had 40, 50 pounds on him, and he didn’t ever back down,” Lewis said. “He was physical, scrappy at times when he had to be. He doesn’t look like he’s going to be that good of a kid, but he sure frustrates the guy on the other side of the line.”
Cheyenne running back Myloe Lewis, who rushed for 2,435 yards and 39 touchdowns, was named the Offensive Player of the Year.
Truckee, which defeated Moapa Valley 34-10 in the state title game, took the rest of the top awards on the Division I-A all-state team. Running back/linebacker Graham Christian was the Most Valuable Player, defensive end Zak Pettit was the Defensive Player of the Year, and Bob Shaffer was named Coach of the Year.
ALL-AMERICA HONOR — Green Valley girls soccer player Nicole Westover was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-America team.
Westover keyed a defense that allowed just six goals all season and posted 14 shutouts. She also scored six goals for the Gators, who lost the Division I state title game to Arbor View on penalty kicks.
Westover was one of just six defenders on the 81-player All-America team.
Westover has committed to play at UNLV.
