Rainey scores three touchdowns as Spartans qualify for playoffs
Antwaun Rainey scored three touchdowns, and teammate Tyree Riley rushed for 216 yards and a score Thursday to power Cimarron-Memorial’s football team to a 49-20 win at Bonanza.
Cimarron (2-7, 1-3 Northwest League) earn a spot in the playoffs and will play at top-ranked Bishop Gorman next Friday.
Rainey ran off right tackle and weaved left across the field for a 55-yard score on the Spartans’ second play in the first quarter.
Riley provided a 55-yard run of his own on Cimarron’s next drive, which was capped by a 21-yard TD reception by Rainey from quarterback George Tribble to make it 14-0 with 6:09 left in the first quarter.
Michael Soukup caught a 25-yard TD pass from Tribble inside the front right pylon on the first play of the second quarter to increase the Spartans’ lead to 21-0.
Bonanza quarterback Wyatt Allison found a rhythm after opening with eight incompletions and led the Bengals on a 9-play, 72-yard drive, which was capped by his TD plunge from inside the 1-yard line to cut the lead to 21-7.
The Bengals (2-7, 0-4) were on the march two drives later, but Cimarron’s Isaiah Herron intercepted Allison on a sideline pass and raced 70 yards for a score on the final play of the first half, giving the Spartans a 28-7 lead.
Riley provided a 69-yard TD scamper, and Rainey, who rushed for 146 yards on eight carries, added a 15-yard TD rush to give Cimarron a 42-7 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Bonanza got a 39-yard TD run from DeShawn Williams, and a 7-yard TD carry from Ricardo Hill to make it 42-20 with 4:18 remaining.
Tribble finished a three-play drive with a 1-yard rushing score for Cimarron, which got an interception from Soukup.
Allison completed 8 of 32 passes for 118 yards for the Bengals, and Williams rushed for 104 yards.
R. J. McCarter had 70 receiving yards for Bonanza, which got eight tackles form Ammon Montenegro.
