RECRUITING: Gorman defensive back Childers chooses Rebels
Charles Childers had drawn recruiting interest from Colorado State, Washington and Purdue.
But in the end, the Bishop Gorman senior cornerback decided it was best to stay at home.
Childers orally committed to UNLV on Monday night, he said Tuesday.
“I looked around UNLV with my parents,” he said. “We know what UNLV is about. We think that UNLV is a program making a step forward. We want to be part of that. It’s a good decision for all of us.”
The 6-foot, 181-pound Childers has intercepted three passes this season for the defending Class 4A state champion Gaels (10-1, 7-0 Southwest League).
As a receiver, he has caught 16 passes for 307 yards and three touchdowns.
Childers is the second Gorman player to commit to a Football Bowl Subdivision program for next season, joining defensive end Justin Chaisson (Oklahoma).
Gorman coach Bob Altshuler has said other seniors with offers include offensive tackle Sam Womack (UNLV) and defensive back John Therrell (Army), though neither has committed.
