ROUNDUP: Basic flurry dooms Durango

PREPS-ROUNDUP-SEP15

Basic High football coach Jeff Cahill asked his offense for a big performance Friday, and he got one.

Devonte Boyd caught four touchdown passes, and the seventh-ranked Wolves racked up 543 yards to cruise past visiting Durango, 59-36.

“I thought we played a great game,” Cahill said. “That’s a tough Durango team.”

The score remained close throughout most of the first half. A pair of long touchdown runs gave the Trailblazers a 14-12 lead over the Wolves, who scored on passes from Jaylen Rose to Antraye Johnson and Boyd.

But Basic scored four touchdowns in the final five minutes of the second quarter to surge ahead for good.

“We got a couple of turnovers there,” Cahill said. “And the great thing is that we were able to capitalize on them.”

The scoring flurry, made possible by an onside kick and a Durango interception, included two more scoring receptions by Boyd, a 21-yard TD run by Jon Scoffield and a 13-yard TD pass from Rose to Johnson to make it 39-14 at halftime.

Cahill acknowledged that his defense left room for improvement, as Durango cut it to 39-20 when Marcus Sanders-Williams ran one up the middle for a 54-yard score on the first play of the third quarter.

“We’ve got to tighten our defense up a little bit,” the coach said.

But the Wolves answered on their next drive, taking a 45-20 lead when Johnson plunged into the end zone for a 2-yard TD with 9:18 left in the third quarter.

They maintained the lead with a fourth-quarter rushing touchdown by Scoffield, and a 9-yard pass from Rose to Boyd with 2:29 remaining.

Arie McQuaig cut it to 45-28 with a 1-yard run at the end of the third quarter for Durango, which finished with 315 yards of offense. Gene Germain added a 3-yard TD run midway through the fourth, but the Trailblazers were unable to stop Basic’s offense at critical moments.

“We’ve got some great players,” the coach said. “When you get those players the ball, good things are going to happen.”
