ROUNDUP: Davis, Spartans shift into gear

PREPS-ROUNDUP-SEP08

Cimarron-Memorial running back Justin Davis waited too long to get into the end zone last week, scoring twice in the fourth quarter against Cheyenne before the Spartans’ rally fell short.

On Friday at Del Sol, Davis gave Cimarron an early lead and never slowed down.

Davis rushed for 231 yards on 24 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Spartans to a 27-7 victory over the Dragons.

“Our line did good and opened big holes for me,” Davis said. “I give it all to the line. I just saw holes all night.”

Davis, listed at 5 feet 5 inches and 155 pounds, did not shy away from running inside, as he showed on his 54-yard first-quarter touchdown. He pounded though defenders at the line before exploding into the clear.

“I have been doing this since I was little, and Coach (John Parcells) has been helping me out a lot,” Davis said of his physical running style. “I just hit it and see what I can get.”

Along with his toughness, Davis displayed nifty moves as he juked his way 26-yards for a second-quarter touchdown that put the Spartans (1-1) ahead 13-0.

While Davis was leading the offense, Cimarron’s defense stuffed Del Sol (0-1) for much of the night. The Dragons were held to 162 yards, with 69 coming in the final nine minutes.

“We aren’t really big, but we run to the football,” Parcells said. “We tackled a lot better. Our alignment and assignments were a lot better.

“Once everyone figures out where they need to be, we could be a dangerous defense. We are not there yet, but we will get better.”

Davis said the victory showed Cimarron’s improvement since its opener.

“Last week we should have won, but we had messed-up assignments,” Davis said. “Every win is good. But we are all going to get better every week.

Next week I’ll try to get 300 (yards).”

Stanley Thomas and Desean Lewis both had sacks for Cimarron, and Michael Barnson and Donovan Dykes each recovered a fumble.

Desean Lewis and Derek Morefield added short TD runs for Cimarron in the second half as the lead swelled to 27-0.
